HD to HD copy

by jeniesis1 - 2/10/06 3:03 AM

I'm running windowsxp pro SP2 on a maxtor 40gb HD and an 80gb HD for data storage. last night my PC froze and restarted 3 consecutive times. then i heard some loud clicking sounds coming from my 40gb HD on the 4th reboot. this morning my PC started normally and had no problem. experience tells me that clicking sound from HDs are telltales of impending doom so this morning i got me another 40gb maxtor (same model).

I want to create an exact copy of my old HD using the new one while i still can. Anybody has any idea how i go about this. i know xp has some sort of limitation concerning HD to HD copy. i'm not gonna transfer the old HD to another PC since that's inviting trouble. I have lots of programs and games on my PC and reinstalling xp would mean reinstalling 40gb worth of software as well.

Is it even possible, or do i have to bite the dust and reinstall xp?

When you get your new hard disk,

The program to copy it will come with it or be on the hard disk maker's download site.

Other software such as ACRONIS (google.com) can make an image and restore that image.

My Maxtor drive. . .

came with, as Bob has mentioned, software called MaxBlast to do exactly what you want. I've used it on three drives. If the drive you got was an OEM (without the software), go to the Maxtor site and download the software.

Do you have broadband CD Burning Software and CD burner?

If so you can download www.ultimatebootcd.com [free]
Burn the ISO [important] to CD

Boot your PC using this CD, press F2 and right cursor key to get to page 5 and use clone-maxx,

If not: -
Alternatively, download clone-maxx from
http://www.pcinspector.de/clone-maxx/uk/download.htm
you need a blank diskette.

PS the ultimate boot cd is a great tool!

Good Luck!

Another potentially free solution

Try http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm
DriveImage XML

DriveImage XML is an easy to use and reliable program for imaging and backing up partitions and logical drives.

The program allows you to:

Backup logical drives and partitions to image files
Browse these images, view and extract files
Restore these images to the same or a different drive
***Copy directly from drive to drive***
Schedule automatic backups with your Task Scheduler

This program is to be found on the free live CD UBCD4Win 'Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, a project for after the transfer!
COuld get a friend to build CD or you could buy CD for only a few $ [for postage, packing and CD] from website. This overcomes the problem of imaging a partition which is in-use.

A few problems.

1. This is the XP forum.
2. Microsoft's backup and restore even in Vista has failed too often to give it any respect.

Let's use items like Clonezilla and others at http://lifehacker.com/5303067/five-best-free-system-restore-tools
