Flash Drive-How to use-Scandisj U3

by helene_okc - 8/30/09 11:20 AM

I have been searching all the forums trying to find out HOW to use my new 8GB scandisk U3. I did put device into USB port, it opened with documents? and then icon with scandisk. I went to my doc/sett folders, and wanted to copy all of these files to this portable storage device.

I saw and read to highlight the files, and then WHAT? after getting files WHAT to do to back them up to flash drive.

I have read nothing but bad things about this device I have, but on Comsumer reports.com it said it was a good one to use.

I noticed nothing amiss as reported here in 2006-08; perhaps Scandisk has improved?

I saw that you can (with U3) download games, etc IF you want, not a requirement.

I have searched from link to link, over the last 2 hrs, but tired of fooling around, and going right to the souce of experts, here on Cnet.

I do have a Western Digital 350GB External HD; but it oftens decides not to work; I have replaced the power source cord 2 times, in 2 yrs. I do have "some" backups on DVD/CD's.

Living in OK, we have many nights that we have to be alert and ready to flee out of the house and fly down to underground cellar, taking papers, ext hd, case of all my software, with me. So I thought getting everything backed up on these flash drives would be great. Now I am reading I bought the wrong thing, plus it will be replaced with another flash drive soon.

Can anyone walk me through HOW to bu my files? and to icon of flash drive, or doc folders? and then what after they are there, do I do?

Also if this product is still no good, would you please let me know.
Thank you kindly, God's blessings on you all, Helene

Helene.......once you have highlighted all the files you want to save then go up to your tool bar and under edit look for "copy to" click it and select your flashdrive (it will be a letter like "d" or "e", etc) then just hit your enter button........hope this is what you were asking help on...........

By the Way

Helene.......I forgot to answer your question regarding the sandisk flashdrive........I have been using my sandisk for quite some time now and it works fine........so I wouldnt worry that you might not have bought a good brand...........and also just because they come out with a new model of flash drive doesnt mean your drive is now obsolete........as long as the amount of memory on the drive is sufficient for your needs just keep right on using it.

Thank you "Gys"

Thank you for taking the time to answer my scandisk questions.
I think I can do it now. I just thought if I hit "Doc/Settings files, that it would move all of these over. On scandisk when you open there was a "doc folder" and then the scandisk icon. I just did not know which one to drag and drop, or highlight all my doc/sett files. I know everyone said it is "easy", and once I do it and confirm what is on the scandisk, then I too will say "its easy" lol.

Again thank you for your assitance, God Bless, Helene

Another question GYS:

by helene_okc - 9/19/09 2:09 PM In reply to: Thank you "Gys" by helene_okc

No, I still have not copied my doc files over to the scandisk, but will asap.

I understand I can either highlight, copy and paste, all the files under Docs.

Scandisk says NOT to copy files in the U3 that is showing on the Scandisk, after you install into a USB port.

It does have a folder saying "DOC", should I just paste everything to that, or do I have to make a folder for me, or can you just make a folder and NAME it what you want>

I know it is a silly question, but when I plg this in, it shows this, and I am not sure to copy or to drag all files to it, or create my own, or IF it will let me CREATE my own folder.

Thank you again. Been busy with yard work, between all this OKC area rains for the last few weeks, and then much paperwork, and a Bible study I am in, takes a lot of reading, but worth the end results.

Thank yo again, (hope that you are still carrying a link to any further questions). Helene

Still Linked

by gysgtusmc74 - 9/19/09 2:22 PM In reply to: Another question GYS: by helene_okc

Hi Helene........still have this thread tracked to my email......I would create a folder and name it whatever you like and then copy your files to that folder........I believe the folder on your sandisk has some files it uses to interact with the computer so I would avoid putting any other files into it...........hope this answers your question............hope you get some sunny days ahead.

Helene.........could sure use some of your rain here in Va........should you wish to remove the u3 software from your sandisk...........then use this link and look for the "remove u3"....it is in pretty small text......it is a small download file and after you download it just run it and it will remove the software...........a little digging and seems a lot of people dont like it and remove it.........thanks for the kind words you have sent my way.......Gregg

Update

by gysgtusmc74 - 9/19/09 2:50 PM In reply to: Another question GYS: by helene_okc

Helene.......the u3 folder is a syncro program that helps you sync your files with other computers...........if you only have 1 computer you could remove the program and regain some additional space to use for your own.........there is a program on the sandisk website that you can use to remove all components of the u3 folder........sorry for the confusion...........feel free to continue this thread if you have any new questions about the u3 folder...............Gregg

U3 removal Gregg

by helene_okc - 9/19/09 3:37 PM In reply to: Update by gysgtusmc74

I guess I should at least read my questions, before I just quickly send them, noting prior spelling errors, too funny! :{

I am all new to this scandisk item, when I first installed into front of computer USB port, I saw this "U3". Went into their website, read a little to get the jest of what it was. I learned that it was a way to download "other programs" or games to this backup Scandisk, if the user wanted too.

I, just wanted to be safe, and to backup my doc files, not to ADD more programs, to my Scandisk. Besides I have 8GB to use for backup, and my doc files is very close to that, taking into consideration for a little excess room, just in case.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the U3 is taking up any of my 8GB of space to copy files over. I thought it was IF I wanted to add more programs. I am a novice at this, and cannot wait until I finally get the hang of this, to purchase more, and backup more items, especially with our high winds here, and tornado's even in winter weather.

I was just reading more details on Cnet forums, about backing things up (get weekly news update by Lee). I do use EXT HD 320GB, which often has a mind of its own, like right now it acts like it is copying items over, blue light, circles around and around, I am not!! Sometimes it just won't do a thing, so I have to shut down computer, and unplug EXT HD, let it cool off and then it usually works.

So the EXT HD is one way, but not secure. I used to bu using CD's, and NEED to get back to doing this. But, alas, with this little pocket port and backup, it may do the trick.

I just thought about something really dumb. After I do backup or copy docs over to this USB flashdrive; IF I have to reinstall my files back to my computer C HD, is all I have to do, is to PLUG scandisk back into a USB port, and tell it to either copy or drag items back? Or if all of your docs are missing on computer, HOW does one get the little scandisk to put the doc files BACK into your HD? Just a thought.

We need to get in the car and grab a bite to eat, have had a craving for a (spelling?) Schlozkie's, none close to us, now its 5:40pm

Anyhow, thank you kindly Gregg, I and I am sure others always appreciate the kindness of knowledgeable computer people as yourself. Often however, it does take time, and nerves of steel to TRY what we are learning, to better ourselves and improve our life and computers, amen? God Bless, Helene

Copy Files

by gysgtusmc74 - 9/19/09 4:18 PM In reply to: U3 removal Gregg by helene_okc

Hi Helene............hope this finds you after having a good dinner........when you copy files over to your sandisk you are in essence backing up your files........so the words are sometimes used interchangeably..........if your hard drive was to fail or any number of other bad things that can happen to a computer..........all you would need to do is plug your sandisk back into your usb port and then copy the files you had previously saved back to your new hard drive.........the files on the sandisk would still be there after you copy them over to the new hardrive........so once you have files on your sandisk they stay there until you either delete them or lose the sandisk...........lol........I think your putting your files onto CD's would be a very good long term storage for your files because the sandisk could fail or you could lose it........so even though using the sandisk is very convenient and fast please back up to your CD's too.......quite literally a backup to your backup if you will......you really should give yourself more credit for your knowledge about computers............you are well on your way to becoming "computer savvy"..............have a great evening........Gregg

Hello Gregg: Updated

by helene_okc - 10/8/09 7:36 PM In reply to: Copy Files by gysgtusmc74

Well I finally did this today, since OKC is having thunderstorms tonight; some times they can get bad enough to produce tornado's.

Anyhow it took me nearly ONE HOUR, which I understand it should have copied files in a "zap"!

I opened, first put the scandisk in the front of computer in the USB slot; it opened, but it was different this time from last. I even noticed that there was a NEW folder "My Docs" which I had not created.

So I renamed this to Do/Sett files OCT 09. Last time it opend my doc files, so I could highlight and copy over. I looked for a way to drag and drop, but it did not give me the chance, strange again.

I finally just kept the scandisk opened, and then opened MY DOC files, and just "COPY" and then go over to scandisk and "PASTE".... Everything is in there, but it took nearly 45 minutes.

Then I tried to COPY a program, but it said "The files are already copied". I checked it was not there (NVAIDA) is what I was trying to copy unto the scandisk.

So, Question: Scandisk will NOT copy any programs over, correct? And you may ask why would I want too. Well there are 2 Programs, QB Old, and Nero Back it up, that I do not have program CD's for.

I still don't think I am doing this scandisk thing correct, should it have taken 45 minutes just for 2 GB?

By the way the first time I put the scandisk in, when we first started talking, when I highlighted the Doc/Sett files, it showed then that there were 7GB to copy, into 8GB, but now it showed 2 GB; all seems to be there, since this is also what it is showing on the original files in C:/

One thing could (I need to hurry thunder getting worse)don't want my aging computer to crash....anyhow I (long story) finally cleared up or after deleting some old programs, got back 4GB free....so that could be the problem.

OK, God Bless Gregg, thought I would let you know that I finally copied and pasted docs over to scandisk.....:{ Helene

Lets see.....................

by gysgtusmc74 - 10/10/09 4:22 AM In reply to: Hello Gregg: Updated by helene_okc

Helene..........the slowness in copying files to your flashdrive sounds like you have whats known as a usb 1.0 connection............you said you had an older computer and a lot of older computers have the slower usb 1............so I wouldn't worry about it taking so long to copy files...........the main thing is that you said your files did copy so that's the most important thing..........just allow yourself some time and all will be well.........if you try to copy files that already exist on your sandisk you will get the warning asking if you want to copy over the files..........understand that program files once installed on your computer can vary seldom be copied so that you can install again later..........you will need the original cd's........having said that sometimes if the program still contains the original .exe file then it might be possible to copy for reinstalling later......thats just the nature of what happens when you install a program.........so am hoping that you can find your original cd's.............I have probably not answered all your questions so just come on back to the forum and will continue this conversation............the front that brought you the storms is heading my way but will only be a rain event......take care............Gregg

Sorry Gregg, Thank you

Been busy with fall planting, opened another about 75 feet of garden, flowers, roses, other bushes along the west side of our house/acreage, for the sweet neighbor, who was 83 to enjoy. Every year she would ask when we were going to finish that area, and I told her this year. However, she got Lukemia, and went in 3 weeks, we buried her last Friday. I loved her, we would share the Lord, such a jewel of a human being.

Anyhow I am degressing, lol, so just getting more into clearing out the mail, and wanted to reply, so you knew that I did receive this reply, and do thank you for all the help and assistance, and the time you took to do this; perhaps others will also benefit from your knowledge in these area.

The computer needs replacing, and hopefully if I can get a ladies books set up, will have the funds in Jan to get a new one. It takes for ever to boot up, and then to get into my mail or any websites, is very very slow. If I am not using it for 30 minutes it will freeze up. I am working around "its" will not my own, lol.

Happy Thanksgiving Gregg, and may the Good Lord bless you and yours always, Helene
