Still using XP

by kitkimes - 10/9/09 4:15 PM In reply to: Poll: Your expectations of the final release of Windows 7 by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a 4 and 1/2 year old computer that came with WIN XP Home and it still meets all my needs. I keep it updated and have install as much protection as I think I need to to be safe on the internet. Of course, as we know, even following a google link can get you in trouble.
I never upgraded to Vista but I did run the Win7 tool to see if I was ready for it. The only thing I failed was a graphics issue. My mother board has the graphics card built-in. I could add a graphics card, but don't see the need. I'll upgrade the computer before I do that.

Expectations

by Garebear44 - 10/9/09 4:20 PM In reply to: Poll: Your expectations of the final release of Windows 7 by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I believe it will be very good. It has to be, with a poor show of Vista and people moving to linux and apple, msoft could be hooped with another loser.

Windows 7

by mistyomine - 10/9/09 8:03 PM In reply to: Expectations by Garebear44

I am still not any kind of a whiz at computers but I'm trying. I run Windows XP and love it. Windows 7 will hopefully be good after Vista. Tried it...no way. Been holding out for the new 7 myself.

It's a toss up..

by rbsjrx - 10/9/09 4:24 PM In reply to: Poll: Your expectations of the final release of Windows 7 by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

...between "No expectations" and "I don't care". If I can possibly avoid it (and now that I'm retired, I can!), I don't plan to ever spend another penny on Microsoft products. I still have a Windows (XP MCE) machine plus 3 Linux machines and my Linux server. I gave away my Vista laptop to my daughter and granddaughter.

Since I no longer require it for my work, I have no use for Windows - a poorly-designed OS with antiquated file systems that's subject to progressive degradation and vulnerable to malware attacks. That's it's over-priced and requires a substantial investment in 3rd-party software to keep it running well only adds insult to injury.

High because so much effort has been for the corporate env.

Win 7 is less ressource hog then Vista, altough Vista SP1-SP2 is very good also, but because of so much negative publicity around Vista like when XP got in the market also prior to the first SP1, even that at that time Vista did not deserve the negative publicity, mostly the PC Builder and software maker were not willing to change their habit and wanted to continue business as usual.

I am trying right now Win 7 64 bits edition and I am very please and how it is compatible with all my games 32 bits, altough I would have love to test games that are made specificaly for an 64 bits OS because a 64 bits is so much efficient compare to the 32 bits OS.

Of course if you have only a 32 bits processor you will not be disapointed also with Win 7, very good networking discovery and wireless is way better then XP, I can't talk about Vista as my daughter only use for now XP but she is looking forward to install Win 7 when it will be released to the public for retail.

From my experience I am more then please with Win 7 and would not hesitate to recommend it to any of my friends and relative as it is so easy to setup.

So my expectation is very high as a current user I want the same stability that Win 7 offer to me and btw I am doing that redaction at the same time I am recording a program on my TV Tuner PCIE and I do not suffer of any laging.

Highly impress of the quality of execution of this OS and would recommend it to anyone that is willing to try the upgrade advisor prior to make the jump.

Poll: Your expectations of the final release of Windows 7 .

by Travelingman626 - 10/9/09 4:29 PM In reply to: Poll: Your expectations of the final release of Windows 7 by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have absolutely NO expectations on Windows 7, BECAUSE . . . . Just look at what MS has pulled off so far: Windows 95 = OK. Windows 98 = Better, just what was needed. Windows 2000 = was about as needed and appreciated as a fart in a crowded elevator! Millenium flopped worse than the Edsel back in the day. Things were getting tight for MS! Then came XP . . . . it was a bit different, folks were hesitant after MS's capital flops, BUT it came off well and continued to get better. Then MS said they were gonna bring something better (Longhorn WAS better, but it needed fine-tuning). MS couldn't wait, made changes, screwed EVERYTHING up from the get-go, and brought Vista, which flopped horribly and was like a wet-fart in a dark suit! It smells, something is wrong (you know it), and others slowly begin to aknowledge the fact, and you're history! 7 is supposed to be better, even faster than XP (MS has been working on it since 2004!), even easier to use for novices, and not as messed up as Vista! I say: look at MS's track record! I'm gonna give it 6-10 months, put my ear to the ground and go from there . . .

My standard advice to early adopters

by rbsjrx - 10/9/09 4:37 PM In reply to: Poll: Your expectations of the final release of Windows 7 . by Travelingman626

I always advise people to wait for SP1 before buying any Windows OS. Even then it's best to wait a month or two after the SP release. In contrast, I advice people to wait a month after a new major Linux release for the dust to settle.

Waiting one month for a new Linux release and one year for a new Windows release has been a good rule of thumb. Apple (the other evil empire) falls somewhere in between.

I agree with Travelingman

Wait on it. Although I've had nothing but Microsoft fan boys saying don't buy a Mac, wait for 7 it'll be better! Personally I beta tested 7 a bit and hated it. I found it very confusing, and strangely it was easier to go from Vista to OS X, so my expectations are low. Microsoft has always let me down though, XP is great now, but useless next year:(

I will say though I did just upgrade to Snow Leopard and I've had no issues, which I found strange because I did expect it, being fairly new, to play up a bit.

Also I think we should all use our Vista drives as coasters. I put my Windows 7 beta disk on the wall:P It looks nice:)

Re don't buy a Mac by a PC user.

by FrenchyHey - 10/9/09 5:58 PM In reply to: I agree with Travelingman by x.killeddestiny.x

I have nothing against Mac Pro, only against lock tight box, do you remember IBM hardware? The my way or the highway.

BTW without the PC there will be no linux period, Apple did not foster the linux as far as I am concern and they are not interested at best they are neutral and yes Microsoft are and probably against it.

Give me ton of money and yes I will buy a Mac Pro give me some money and I will built my own PC and put what ever I want on it including unbutu (Linux). Don't you love that fredom that is open architecture of the PC and dual boot and virtual environment.

So what is your anser mister Mac Fana boy?

Been testing it for about a year now and there are no bugs and no crashes.
Its about security, using less ram, speed, easy to network.

but will my hardware work without upgrading to 7 ultimate

by Florrymc - 10/10/09 10:16 AM In reply to: your wrong by BobTec1

A friend of mine recently bought a quad core machine which unfortunately came with windows vista. He had been using a firewire mixer/ audio interface on an xp home based machine with no problems but had to upgrade to vista ultimate to get his hardware working with his new machine. Surely if a piece of hardware is supported by the older OS the new OS should support it by default instead of ripping people off with upgrades.
We attempted to install XP on the new machine but found it impossible to remove VISTA.
So to conclude I wouldn't risk putting vista or windows 7 near any of my machines.
bring back Win2000

This protected installation by the manufacturer

by FrenchyHey - 10/10/09 12:08 PM In reply to: but will my hardware work without upgrading to 7 ultimate by Florrymc

Has nothing to do with Vista.

Do you think that protected partition will resist to a boot from CD/DVD rom?

If you try to install XP over Vista it won't work.

Same for Older OS on top of new one.

You don't deserve a PC if you think that.

Keep your XP or go Mac lol

Windows 7

by mazdamike6 - 10/9/09 4:37 PM In reply to: Poll: Your expectations of the final release of Windows 7 by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been using Windows 7 as a "Beta" tester for a few months. I have found it almost as easy to use as XP, although the basic layout is very Vista like( no surprises there ) it is less memory hungry and a "cleaner" layout. As I am using a multi boot system (XP-Vista-7) all 32 bit, I change around a lot. I still dont like vista, but I am moving more to 7. I will still use my beta copy until it dies then may purchase the full program. Then I can use my Vista disk as a drinks coaster.:)
