If I have a laptop, tv tuner card & directv can I record tv shows without paying extra for DVR service from Directv?

TV tuner as a capturing device only and not...

as a tuner. In other word, you can only record what the "box" is tune to. Therefore you cannot watch one channel and record another. That's been my experience with DirecTV.

Thanks for the info. Do you have to pay Directv extra $$$ to enable the DVR capability even if your DVR is a laptop or other 3rd party device?
