Buzz Out Loud: The superhero / anime group

by Ken from Chicago - 10/9/09 3:18 AM

I was watching a new show on Adult Swim that spoofed VOLTRON, POWER RANGERS and other anime shows, right down to the various stereotypes of teammates, and this was right before copying over the latest BOL podcast to listen to at work during downtime, and I started seeing Buzz Out Loud as if it were a steretypi-er archetype superhero / anime team--and a bonus further reference.

Tom Merrit: The Leader--calm, trustworthy, brave, sure, square-jawed, like Superman, Captain America or Cyclops, On Firefly, he'd be the lighter side of Captain Malcolm Reynolds, like in the movie, the calm, reassuring voice that alerts you to strap into your seatbelts because we may experience some slight turbulence and explode.

Molly Wood: The Warrior--Bold, brash, she's scared of noone and nothing, no assembled associated, commercial corporation or government institution. Like Tom Petty, stand her up at the gates of hell and she won't back down. She's like Wonder Woman, but less ambassador, more amazon, less Lynda Carter more Lucy Lawless.Bonus: Her Firefly counterpart, duh, Zoe,

Rafe Needleman: The Maverick--Unconventional, contrarian, the conspiracist, the lone wolf, the rebel, he plays by his own rules, in superhero form, Batman or Wolverine. Bonus: His Firefly counterpart: A man called Jayne.

Natali Del Conte: The Lady--Very prim, very proper, very poise, very polished, she not only plays by the rules but knows them like the back of her perfectly manicured hands. And yet don't mistake her formality for weakness. There's also a hint of mystery, because she doesn't just play by the rules, but she plays the rules, so well she gets them to do her bidding. In superhero form she's like Black Widow or Wonder Woman, more ambassador than amazon, more Lynda Carter than Xena. Her Firefly counterpart: The more formal side of Inara, and far far far less the lady of the evening.

Brian Cooley: The Veteran--The "Old Man", he's seen it all, nothing surprises him. Tho he's somewhat set in his ways and has no problems ticking off people (like the French or Europeans in general). In superhero form he would be like Wildcat or Superman-2, the older one from the Justice Society of America, from Earth-2, where everything is about 20 years older. His Firefly counterpart: Shepard.

Veronica Belmont: The Ingenue--The gal next door, the best friend of man and woman alike. The Betty to Veronica, the Mary Ann to Ginger, the gal you bring home to the folks, like the superheroine Batgirl or Kitty Pryde. Her Firefly counterpart: Kaylee

Jason Howell: The Rookie--The newest / youngest member of the team, the one still wet behind the ears, but who has heart, grit, gumption, and potential, raw untapped potential waiting to be developed, like Robin (either Dick Grayson or Tim Drake). His Firefly counterpart: Well, the best parallel is River, in her saner moments, like at the start of SERENITY where she was "reading" the townfolk when they were robbing a mercenary company or at the end of the movie.

P.S. Of course there would be seven like the JLA or the Seven Samurai often had seven members.
