Need help to eliminate a Network Connection

by lucid oldie - 10/2/09 10:28 PM

I stupidly created a Network Connection using the Connection Wizard in Vista and I want to eliminate it as my ISP connection is actually Browser based.
So now I get one or two popups asking me to connect to broadband which I have click on to close. This also gives me authentification issues as well.
So has anyone else solved something like this? Any advise to eliminate this problem please(other than reinstalling the operating system from scratch, which would be a pain...lol.)?

What does that mean?

"my ISP connection is actually Browser based."

Browsers do not connect a computer to the internet, they just utilise any existing connection.

What network connections do you have now, and why can't you right click the unwanted connection, and delete, or disable?

A dial up connection...

by lucid oldie - 10/3/09 7:21 AM In reply to: What does that mean? by MarkFlax Moderator

Thanks for the reply Mark...

I keep getting a "dial up connection" message whenever I start my computer, or if it comes out of powersaving mode. Even though I have Broadband Connection Local and Internet in the System tray.

Well when I first installed Vista I created a connection using the Connect to a Network Wizard. BAD move. Entered my user name and password but I wasn't able to connect to the Internet.

I then created a connection using the IE 7 Browser 192.168.1.1. and entered my user name and password and was able to access the Internet.

Since then I have installed IE8 (Not sure that has any bearing on what has happened but I thought I'd mention it...)

I can't try, but my guess is that it is more or less like printers.

In the screen shown in step 4 of http://www.plus.net/support/dial-up/setup/vista_dialup.shtml right click on the connection you want to delete and see if there's a "delete" or "remove" option.

Thanks Kees
Yes in that link those are the exact steps I took the first time and when that didn't work, I then went through the steps using my browser.
So I should maybe right click the connection and delete any connections and start again but using only the browser configuration?

If you don't have dial-up ...

you don't need a dial-up configuration. IE should pick up the broadband connection automatically, if you make the right choice in Tools>Internet Options>Connections tab (with me it's all emtpy and grey).

A Dial Up connection

I should also mention that I'm using ethernet cable, not wireless.

Try this.

by MarkFlax Moderator - 10/3/09 9:38 AM In reply to: A Dial Up connection by lucid oldie

Open IE, and go to Tools > Internet Options, then the Connections tab.

Make sure the "Never dial a connection" is selected. Click Apply, but not OK.

Next, if there are any entries in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings", delete them. These are for dial-up connections and are not needed if you don't have any dial-up connections. Click Apply again, then OK.

That IP address you used, 192.168.1.1 in the browser was to get you access to your router setup. Now the router is configured, your broadband connection is always on as soon as you start the computer, and the browser is not required to 'start' the connection, just to surf the internet and, if required, to access the router setup details.

If doing the above doesn't stop the 'dial-up connection' message at startup, tell us exactly what the message says next time you see it please.
