Should I Update to I.E. 8?

by Louis39 - 9/25/09 7:55 AM

I got a new PC last week and every day a message comes up saying that there are updates ready. The update is Internet Explorer 8. Currently, I am using I.E. 7 and Firefox. Should I update to I.E. 8? Is it a significant improvement if at all? Thanks for any comments, opinions and info.

On a new Machine?

by MarkFlax Moderator - 9/28/09 12:36 PM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

I would say yes, definitely update. IE8 is a significant improvement in security and also in web page design as it conforms to W3C web standards.

Even if you do not use IE that much, I would still upgrade as there will always be the odd web site that doesn't work too well in other browsers.

Upgrading to IE8

by feranm_ie8team - 9/29/09 10:15 AM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

Hi, this is Feran with the Internet Explorer Outreach Team. From a security standpoint, IE8 is a much safer browser than previous versions so may be in your best interest to upgrade. A recent NSS Labs study shows that Internet Explorer 8 is the best browser for protecting consumers against malware and phishing attacks: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/08/13/real-world-protection-with-ie8-s-smartscreen-filter.aspx

IE8 also has many new features such as web slices and accelerators. You can learn more about it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx?ocid=ie8_sm_b

Thanks and hope this info helps!

IE8

If IE 8 is such a great power, why can't I retrieve my gmail? Why all the crashes. Firefox is BY FAR the best browser out there. It is faster, more efficient, and NEVER crashes. Why did you put out a product that doesn't interact with all web pages, as IE7 did? WHY is it so SLOW?

See download com users reviews about IE8

I wouldn't say that IE8 is either safe and useful. On my Vista computer it crashes constantly.

May be some other problems?

We often find that some bad IE add-on causes such crashes.

Perhaps you're finding that as well.

Go For It

I'd say yes, upgrade to IE8 - it is a lot more secure than IE7 - but then, it doesn't have much to beat? Is it the most secure browser? Depends who is doing the evaluation! I can't say, I only use it for Windows Update - I've been a Firefox fan since the Phoenix Beta!

Since I have downloaded IE 8 I have had continual problems..

by jimdrew - 10/2/09 6:07 PM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

An error message pops up every time I change to different web pages saying that Windows is closeing that page....I than have to send a message to Microsoft. This is very annoying and I can't find an answer...someting to do with DEP I believe....

Just a little embarrassing ...

by christiman - 10/2/09 9:29 PM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

Hi everybody. Just saw this title and like to share my latest experience. Im setting up my new Sony VAIO notebook and for some reasons I felt like doing all by the book / as recommended. I'm not quite sure if I was asked or not but IE8 was installed resulting in the fact that an error message came up when trying to register Windows Vista Business saying that the browser version is not compatible with the registration process! It seems that I'd need to go back to IE7 to be able to register so I think I quickly forget about this again. Kind regards, Christiman

switch to IE8?

by zepper - 10/2/09 10:05 PM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

Last I knew there were still some fairly major bugs in IE8 that had not been fixed. I understand the bugs only cause real problems for some users. In any case, Firefox or Opera are more secure and standards-based browsers than any ver. of IE. So, as another reply stated, I use IE only for those web functions that require it (mainly Windows Update) and I'm still using IE7 with all the security patches from Windows Update. Other than that it's Firefox for me.

I'd suggest subscribing to some newsletter that reliably covers such topics. Windows Secrets is one that will tip you to problems and warnings about Windows patches and those for many other programs which might be troublesome for you.

I.E. 8

by jfford - 10/2/09 11:14 PM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

I had to uninstall I.E.8 from three machines running Vista OS. Even though I was using other browsers for surfing, the Internet settings in 8 caused connections to some websites to fail and also prevented some eMail message attachments from opening. While it may work well for some folks, I prefer Google Chrome for most all browsing. Not only is it faster, but it has all of the features I need and use daily.

using IE8 when I run some softwares

by Arunadv - 10/3/09 1:39 AM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

I run some software which creates xml files and uploads it to the desired websites. When I run Internet Explorer 6 on my windows XP SP3 system the softwares completes the proceedings well. But, when I update to Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8, the software fails to select the xml file by itself and does not upload it to the desired website. Whenever I tried to perform this action a message window of the website appears that 'Please select Xml File'. I am not able to run Internet Explorer 8 on my system as it does not support the normal functionality of the software.

Using EI8

by Ed Sterling - 10/3/09 6:12 AM In reply to: Should I Update to I.E. 8? by Louis39

Since your machine is new I would say yes try it. I brought it in and had to delete it and go back to EI7 this being an older machine. There was lot of things going on so I could not use it..

Having said that I also use FireFox. The latest ver 3.5 wants to be the King of the Hill and replace EI and with this combo of EI8 and FireFox I suspect internal conflicts since I am not a geek I am not sure..In addition our PC's are subject to an outside influence while we sleep. EI8 with it new security measures may have some heart burn with that. I am not sure our anti everythings are able to pick up on all that our PC's are subjected to while we are not manning the keyboard.
