I have a mac mini 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM (2007 model)
I want to know whether it would be worth putting down money on Snow Leopard for my can mini. Will is speed it up a noticeable amount? Will it have and useful new features?
Thank you for your help
I'm not sure that SL will be the magic OS for your particular machine.
1GB of RAM is a little short these days but the processor speed is adequate.
Fortunately, RAM is cheap for this machine so maxing it out will give you a boost, even without SL.
For the price, I would go with it, after maxing the memory.

I stupidly upgraded to Snow Leopard, and have had networking and printing issues ever since. I would dearly LOVE to downgrade to Leopard (10.5.x), but one of the first of many (in retrospect) balls-up things Snow Leopard does is to "upgrade" all your mailboxes (.mbox files) to be Snow Leopard 'versions'... Until I find a way of returning these to their former, solid and reliable Leopard versions, I am prevented from downgrading to happiness!
I RUE THE DAY I ever "upgraded" to Snow Leopard. So, in brief, if you use wireless networking, or need access to a networked printer, leave Snow Leopard well alone. It will severely spoil your day!
Hope my bitter experience can be of some value to others tempted by the Apple marketing.
A.
Please don't forget that Leopard was a real mess in the early versions. Your "solid" version is probably 10.5.8. SL is only 10.6.1. The pint problems vanish soon because the new drivers are pouring in. A little patience and it will be as stable as Leopard or late Tiger.
On another note, I don't see much improvement as a user, even speedwise, and am struggling with browser problems that were not there in Leopard. But again, it should pass with new updates.
As for printing, there is always Gutenprint that I use successfully and that was update last month or so.
I just merged G4 MDD files into a Mac Pro MB871LL/A running 10.6.1 SL and the integration was seamless to printing etc. I had to drop Safari down to 32 bit in "get info" to run Spell Catcher and re-verify some serial numbers but that was about it.
Spell Catcher?
You probably already know this, but OS X has a built-in, System wide, spell checker as part of the OS.

and the Thesaurus in Spell Catcher is really cool. I started with Thunder 7 on my Mac IIx and can't seem to leave Spell Catcher. ![]()
Can't find network at all, I will keep at it but so far grrrr. Got to be something I am missing I guess. I hate to email or sneaker net files to print out especially if they are online ones. Another problem I had was no volume on starting up, I kept setting it then restarting made it go back to zero, I found some script in the forums that fixed that.
I was a happy PC convert to Mac till I upgraded to SL. The issue I have far as I know as of now is playing video. I cannot play video directly from iPhoto or from attachment in an email. I have to go to Show File which shows up in Finder to be able to play the video in QuickTime X.
This issue was posted on Apple's Mac Forum since the next day SL was released and to-date this is not fixed.
Recently when I tried to watch TV shows, it would not play...I had to figure it out to get around it.
Initially, I had to adjust the printer setting.
Guess I had higher expectation for the Mac.
use either VLC or Real Player. Both shareware and well worth the download. VLC will open just about any Windows or Mac video file you throw at it and plays as well as any. QT won't open many avi files but VLC will.
VLC under file click "quick open file" and select the file you want to play.
and your problems should cease.
I play video in email with SL

I just got a new 20" IMac with snow leopard and everything works fine.No problems yet, the only problem I've had is some screensaver will not work with it ,but I can live with that.
