How do I extract a file to my external HD's root directory?

by layclerk - 10/2/09 9:19 AM

Hi, I have a firmware update to install into my Western Digital Media Center. The instructions say to first extract the necessary files to the hard drive's root directory, then plug the media center into the external hard drive. How do I find that directory? It's not my computer's internal hard drive, but an EXTERNAL hard drive we're talking about here. Opening up the external drive under My Computer only displays files I've copied/moved to the drive, not the actual drive's main directory. How do I do this? I have an HP dv5t laptop running Windows Visa 32-bit Home Premium. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

You simply need to open Windows Explorer ...

then click on the external drive and it will be showing you the root.

Unless you have created some directories on that external drive it is likely that the files you see currently are in the root directory.
