Should I put a booster on my cable line?

by babarsac - 9/23/09 2:41 PM

I have Comcast basic TV and high speed services. There is only one outlet in the house so the technician split the line to feed my cable modem and TV. If I hook the line coming out of the wall into my HDTV I can pick up the free HD channels that com with basic service. If I run the line through the splitter I get a message on my screen saying the signal isn't strong enough to pick up the HD.

My question is should I replace the splitter with a booster such as the Motorola BDA-S2?

I agree, you could try, but...

...to be honest there's no reason why your signal shouldn't currently be ample enough to still receive the free HD channels given you only have a single split. It's a single family home, I assume(?) Perhaps the problem is upstream at the pole/drop. If that doesn't solve your issue definitely press Comcast to get their act together. Their technician should have checked *all* the channels while he was hooking you up.

Let the cable company determine if a booster is in order

then the cost of the booster will be theirs not yours.

True, but

I should have also mentioned you have to prorate this service w/ Comcast. In some areas there may be a service charge for the visit plus (in some cases) they might argue for an additional charge they justify by saying not only does the OP need a booster, but the home needs new/replacement wiring. YMMV.

(NT) My different cable company doesn't charge for service calls.

Agree, 110%. But FWIW, they all charge given certain circumstances.
