Looking for PCIE x16 graphics card with HDMI media file out

by edenney - 9/24/09 5:26 AM

I've been working primarily off of laptops for the last few years and have gotten behind on desktop video cards a little. I need to find a video card that has hardware accelerated, direct TV out for media files, preferably with an HDMI interface. In other words, I'm looking for a card that outputs (with hardware assistance) any video played through any media player (or particular players supported by the card). When no file is being played, nothing should output. I'm not looking for a dual monitor solution with a media player running in full screen on the second monitor, so please do not suggest that.

I've looked through a number of current video cards and I'm having a hard time finding any of them that specifically say they do what I'm looking for. Matrox used to make a series of cards several years ago that did exactly what I'm asking, although at the time I believe the highest quality signal it outputted was S-Video. These were the Millennium G450 and G550 series cards, as well as the G55 which followed later. These cards are outdated though and I'm sure there must be cards that do exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance!

My kids machine has a dated, simple, cheap Nvidia 6800 card and we put the DVD to HDMI adapter on it and put it to a HDMI port on a HDTV. Everything plays. Since we don't have a higher end card the audio is not piped over HDMI but that's a non-issue here.

use catalyst control center to use theater mode and it will output direct x video to your secondary monitor. an hd 4000 or higher will support audio over the hdmi inputs also.
hd 4650, $55:
