I have been having a problem for about a year now. I keep cleaning stuff off of my hard drive in Vista and a couple of days later it is back down to 20 GB free. It seems to hover around there no matter what I do. I'll delete 30 GB of files and a few days go by and the space is gone. Is there an automatic backup that maybe running or is the search indexing taking up most of my space?

Not an answer but the same type of question sort of. I have a 2 year old dell with Intel core 2 duo running Windows Vista, 32 bit. Hard drive C is 300GB. About 2 to 3 weeks ago it showed that I had 3.8GB left and the line was way in the red, I did all the usual things like disk clean up, defrag,cleaning the cache and uninstalled a few things that I don't use. I managed to get it up to 34GB available. I should tell you that there is noway that I have that much stuff on my computer. Just to be sure I bought a 1T external HDD to transfer some of my pictuers to. Before it arrived one day I checked to see what was left on my C drive and wow it was back down where it should be at about 180 used. Today the same thing happened. I'm back at having only 7.7GB free. What the heck is going on? I have hardly added anything to the computer since the last incident. Everything that I download now goes direcltly to the external HDD. I have no idea how it fixed itself the first time or why it has happened again. I need helpppp!
For both the posters here, is the Winsxs folder issue. Discussed here;

It affects Windows Vista as well. But as yet, there are no more details and no resolution.

Hello,
If you are concerned your scheduled backups may be eating away at your disk space you can adjust the settings, see more on how to do this here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-backup-settings-should-I-use-to-maximize-my-disk-space
