reboot ?

by WayneRichardJ - 9/18/09 11:19 PM In reply to: Help, USB connections is not always being detect by PC by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When i have a problem with a device no mater which operating system I am running the first thing I try to do is open up my device manager and check to see if the drivers are working properly. another thing that you can try is simply reboot your computer. If you want to here about a strange experience I had with my hp laptop my power button stop working I did not use it for along time. then sent it to a tech to see if he could fix it when he got it worked perfectly and has every since so maybe just stop using your laptop for a while and see what happens. Every once in awhile a driver for one of my devices dose not load right and i will uninstall the device scan for hardware changes and the device will start working properly. I would suggest that when you ask for a solution to a problem that you include as much information as possible about your pc and os because some problems are hardware or operating system specific. Good Luck.

USB device not working

by WayneRichardJ - 9/18/09 11:39 PM In reply to: Help, USB connections is not always being detect by PC by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Sorry I should have read further in to your post. If your laptop is less than a year old it is still under warranty. Ask hp for help. If it is over a year old I would get rid of the vista OS and put in a windows 7 OS I have been running win 7 on my hp laptop and it solved a whole lot of little problems I was having win7 use less resources and has less driver problems than vista. Also if you do a clean install it get rid of all the unnecessary apps that hp puts on your laptop. Only do this if it is over a year old because it will void your warranty. The win7 system is very good about finding the proper drivers for your PC unlike vista.

enable usb by registry

If any virus had disable your USB then you can use registry to enable just copy below text into notepad and save as enable.reg and double click it and give yes to enable.

Undetected USB drive

by chesuba - 9/19/09 3:38 AM In reply to: Help, USB connections is not always being detect by PC by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Sometimes USB ports obtain same drive letters as existing defined drives, then USB ports will not be recognised.
Type 'diskmgmt.msc' in Start/Run feature (bottom left hand corner). A disk management window will open, with all open drives and the undetected USB drive will have the same drive letter eg D/E commonly used, which is already existing. This will show up as removable disk.
Right click on that object and select 'Change drive letter' and change to some other drive letter eg K, X Y, which is normally not used in PC parlance except in Network programming.
Change the drive letter to your choice and press OK and close disk management window.
Open My computer and the USb will show up, as your designated rive letter.
Hope this helps...

If this were the case the device would not work on any port

by Olifrench - 9/20/09 3:29 AM In reply to: Undetected USB drive by chesuba

The original poster, like me, has the problem that some devices are not recognised on some ports and are on others. Your solution is for devices that are recognised (they can be seen in Disk Management) but have a conflicting drive letter. A separate problem. Not the solution to the posted problem.

(To make sure I tried it with the SanDisk Cruzer 4GB thumb drive I have that doesn't work on one of the 2 ports on the right side of my laptop but works on the other. This is not cheap rubbish as some would imply the problem stems from. My daughter's identical crive works well on that port too.)

I believe that the system remembers if a device failed on a port and doesn't try again to run that particular device on that particular port.

USB Power settings

by ac0mputerguru - 9/19/09 8:29 AM In reply to: Help, USB connections is not always being detect by PC by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When I run into this problem, I have found that turning off the USB's Power Conservation settings usually is the cure. Go into Device Manager (Start->Run->DEVMGMT.MSC) and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers. For each item that is labeled as a "hub," double-click the hub entry, select the Power Management tab and uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Reboot for the change(s) to take effect. Some USB devices have a problem "waking up" after they have been powered down, and this stops the hub from going to sleep.

USB problems

by balouke - 9/19/09 11:50 AM In reply to: USB Power settings by ac0mputerguru

I apologize that I didn't read every answer but in those I read there was always some good thing but never the hole story.
It seems that USB is sometimes try-and-error work and not directly a hardware problem:
- If you have more USB devices to connect than ports available, sometimes a drive letter conflict can occur. Than a device will often not be detected.
- If the device wants more power than the USB port can deliver = no detection
- when you stop using a device, e.g. by using "Savely Remove Hardware", sometimes you have to really disconnect the device to restore the connection.
So, my proposal is:
1.Buy a good POWERED USB hub, available with up to 10 ports!,e.g. Belkin is perfect. This is certainly recommended to connect large external disks or a camera.
2. Uninstall all USB ports in Device Manager and restart the computer.
All USB ports will be re-installed automaticly (this is likely also cleaning up the USB connections history..but I'm not certain) .
3.Than connect the USB hub to one port, it will also be installed.
Save one USB port on the PC e.g. for direct connection of a often used USB stick, and , if possible, one for a host(a device of a friend..)
4. Connect each device one after the other to a specific PORT of the HUB(and label it!) AND give it a specific DRIVE LETTER using Disk Manager.
If you respect the setup you made, it will garantee a quick and troublefree USB traffic. I recommend also to always use "Savely Remove Hardware" to protect your data.Hot swapping is dangerous.

Not working here

by Olifrench - 9/20/09 5:21 PM In reply to: USB Power settings by ac0mputerguru

I use Vista enterprise. All my USB Root Hubs have 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' unchecked. Still I have this problem that one Sandisk Cruzer doesn't work on one port but works on the next port and another Sandisk Cruzer of same capacity works on both those ports. Other USB storage devices work on this port that doesn't work with that Cruzer.

However I must admit that I have just, to my dismay, found that in this case it is actually, as some have said, a simple connection problem: I connected the Cruzer with a USB extension cable and... it works on that port, finally! I find it hard to believe because these USB contacts are so big compared to, say, RJ-45 contacts but it definitely works with the extension cable and not without.

Here you are, in front of your very eyes, a convertion from the conviction it was software to the admission it was hardware!

At least for my particular case...

Those Vista Enterprise versions are supported by your company! And Microsoft. You lucky person!

Just get an extention...perhaps

by bitsdewan - 9/19/09 2:35 PM In reply to: Help, USB connections is not always being detect by PC by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Yes i had similar problems with an older laptop so i got a new USB hub and attached my previously untraceable camera to the hub and lo !!! it worked... i guess the older USB connectors are not sometimes powering properly so the hub being new works just fine... Its not a solution but something that worked for me...

USB connection not being detected on laptop

by wegrzyna - 9/19/09 7:48 PM In reply to: Help, USB connections is not always being detect by PC by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have one more suggestion for not detected USB connections. I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1150 and have already tried everything listed in all the comments on the subject. Every known working USB device I have will not work on this laptop. I determined through further research that the USB controller on the motherboard is probably bad. As a last resort to keep the laptop for a while longer without going through the expense of a new motherboard or sending out for repair, I chose to use a PC Card USB controller.

I bought mine at Tiger Direct but have also seen them at NewEgg.com. They are around $20 and extend the use of a laptop without the expense of a repair or motherboard.

Just thought this might help someone else who does not want to spend a lot for a solution.

Good solution when none of the ports work

by Olifrench - 9/20/09 3:35 AM In reply to: USB connection not being detected on laptop by wegrzyna

But not for the problem at hand where a specific port stops working for a specific device only, with the device working on another port.
