Hello all of you. Well for Christmas Im getting a laptop. It would have to be a reasonable price, so Macs are out of the picture. But the price range would be between $400-$900. I was looking at Dells, HPs, & Sonys. I want a sleek and thin looking laptop that will get the job done not one of those netbooks or ultraportables that have no specs worth looking at. Im 14 going into high school so I need a fast laptop. ( Also I want a mac but since theyre too expensive I cant get one, but I love chiclet keyboards and multitouch trackpads!) One more thing a webcam is like a must! So thats a plus. So if anyone can help me, I would be very thankful.
Also, I need a laptop that I could play SIMS3 on, and not slow it down (my computer slows down)This is a major problem, but Id like to use it for that, if do-able.
If you have a laptops youd like to recomend Id appreciate it.
It's not the brand that matters. You wrote "sleek and thin looking laptop" but then go on about PERFORMANCE. You will find that having both will push the cost beyond your budget.
2. Your post didn't reveal what you use now. So it would be hard to use our laptop pickers at the top of this forum and see if what they found would be better than what you use now.
Tell a little more and is the sleek and thin really important?
Bob
Why doesnt brand matter? Dont some laptops crash and their tech support sucks? Well Im using an older Dell and thats the only computer in our house. I dont know the specifics on this computer but its like 8 years old I beleive. I went on with the performance because like Im going into high school and its nothing big, but I need a system that wont fail on me. I like sleek and thin because I dont want to be carrying around a bulky laptop. its not even sleek and thin as much as the design, like I rather have a dell or sony or hp rather than the thinkpad, it has to be a beautiful laptop that can perform well, I know my budgeting is low, but my parents wont get me anything higher, seeing as how I have to come up with half for it. and I dont have a job because of my age.
Thanks again.
I needed a backup machine for my office. I picked up a simple 350 buck Toshiba Celeron 2.1somethingGHZ and had a 2GB stick to add to it for a total of 3GB. It has the 4500MHD display chip and just today he figured out how to run the last game that wouldn't run. It was in need of a Java download.
So for less than 400 he's doing it all and it's no slouch.
For just a few dollars more you can get a nice dual core CPU and a bigger hard disk from the same maker so I'll let you look for that.

and she loves it. no problems and all. even though some people say they suck, Im unsure. I do have one question though, do you have any background info on the laptop brands I listed before (sony hp dell) cause those are the main ones im looking at. Im more interested in Sony, but Idk how they run, like HP vs Dell vs Sony.
And do you have any pointers on how to go about buying a laptop. Youve helped me a lot.
I shop around the stores so I can see the unit, the display and if I find I don't like the display or keyboard I remove it from the list. Then I shop on amazon, newegg.com, geeks.com and order it up.

yeah I told my parents when the time comes, that we'll have to go out to look at the models. Thanks for the help Bob.
Your budget is too low for what you want.
Look up the requirements for SIMS 3. That's your laptops spec. Mostly I think you will find you want a lot of RAM and dedicated Video cards. RAM is cheap to add in later. Video pushes up the price of the laptop.
Of the brands you mention my experinece is this.
HP: Busted, HP fixed. Still in use 6 years later. Design defect keeps the laptop it tethered to a base station though.
Dell: Busted, not working, worthless in warranty brick that Dell refuses to fix. But for the brick thing the laptop is nice.
Sony: No direct experience but they seem to have a good but pricy repuation.
Toshiba: (You didn't mention this). My laptop lasted 2 years. It was repurchaged under an extended warranty when they could not repair the laptop.
ThinkPad (Was IBM, Now Lenovo). Bougth old garage sale ones. They keep on working.
Apple MacBook/Pro. So far so good. No problem or repairs needed on 2 of them.
When you say my budget is far to low, what are you directing that at? At wanting to play SIMS3 or something else? (sorry I got confused)
So your saying Dell basically sucks? Cause I was looking into them, and I was curious how their laptops are. Sony is a bit pricy, I agree, but so is apple. ): lol. I want my laptop to last more than two years, I was look at four. (: and then some. But thanks for all the in put. Im excited for christmas time (laptop time!)
You want a laptop who's specs are going to cost you more than your budget allows. Either you need a bigger budet to get the laptop that meets your needs, or you need to lower your needs until you hit your budget.
Hi,
I don't think you can have it all by being "sleek and thin" by the budget you are in. If you want to have those kind they are going to be expensive. I had a friend, he is using a lenovo. It has a webcam but I'm sure it was not thin. He is using it for his school research and everything that he does on the internet. I like it to, by its performance. Here's a link for you to see some lenovo products http://www.lenovoprices.com/
