Flash Drive Gone Kaput?

by bobbymcshankleby - 9/14/09 4:08 AM

Okay, just a month ago I purchased a HP netbook, and two weeks ago I purchased a PNY USB flash drive. Sometime over the weekend, the flash drive stopped working...

It makes the pinging sound when inserted, but whenever I try to do something with it, it says to insert a disk into drive D:. It's still being recognized in my Device Manager. Any help to prevent me from going prematurely gray would be much obliged...

HP USB FORMAT UTILITY

I've used this to format these drives and bring about half back to service.

Hey Bob

Thanks for the reply. I did download what I think was that program, and tried it out. It once again knows that there's a Flash Drive inserted, but it when I try to run it it says that there's nothing on the Drive. That's weird because a) there should be and b) should that not matter? I just want to be able to use the thing I paid money for not two weeks ago.

I'd buy another Flash Drive, but how can I make sure that that one won't screw up as well?

Now that I can assure that some day.

Some day it will screw up. All these things have a limited life span. And why we backup what we can't lose to 3 or more other places.

Your reply however and the words you used makes me wonder if you got the utility I noted. Here are screen shots of it.

Yeah, that's the program...

I know next to nothing about the mysteries of computers. Probably more than all of our grandparents, but not a whole lot.

But I did download that program, and that's the thingamabob that pops up. I don't know the exact way to work it, so when I check all the various boxes I can check and hit start, that's what comes up. "There is no media in device".

I know tech craps out, but after just two weeks? That's insane.

Thanks for your generous help, though.

Flash Drive problem?

by John R. Dye - 9/16/09 5:51 PM In reply to: Flash Drive Gone Kaput? by bobbymcshankleby

If you are running Windows XP or Vista, select "Add new hardware" to install your flash drive.

This will also be necessary if you upgrade to Windows 7.

Tried that.

Says it's working perfectly. Really? Perfectly?

It doesn't even show up on my MacBook.

Granted, this isn't expensive equipment but I want it to work because the principal of the thing is that things should work. I didn't even get the National Geographic stuff off of it and I freaking love nature.
