Buy a Sony Vaio Z now or wait a little more?

by smit9192 - 9/15/09 9:22 PM

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a full processing (more than 2.0 Ghz Duo Core), very light weight (near 4lbs), and long battery life (4hrs+) laptop. I am willing to spend about $2k on the laptop. So after alot of research i decided on buying Sony Vaio Z series. I noticed that it lacks a few standard features such as the fact that there's no backlit keyboard option which is now a standard option in laptops worth more than $1k. It kind of makes me think that sony will prob. come out with a refreshed version with Windows 7.

So my question is, does a new high-end sony seem like a good possibility?

About those hours.

What I'm getting is 1/2 the rated hours now. So to get a real 4 hours I have to find a 8+ hour rating.

However how about this model -> http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/toshiba-e105-s1602/4505-3121_7-33695853.html

This has backlit keys and is well under 1K. My kid has a similar model with the Intel GMA 4500 chip and it plays all his games.

weight

the only problem i have w. the toshiba is that it starts at 5lbs! and for me it would be too much.

about the Zseries tho, r u saying u only get near 2hrs? .. cuz the on z's site they say its supposed to run up to 6hrs .. thats y i was hoping realistically that i would be able to get 4hrs of battery life out of it ...

and just wondering: would windows 7 on it make a big difference on the battery life?

Why I got so few hours.

I was actually using the machine. Powerpoint, demo the applications I write and a few PDFs. Yes, I get more hours if I'm not on the keyboard.

The weight is partially due to the battery so to get all this you end up with a pound or more in the battery.
