installing xp home.re installing

by ellis feigenbaum - 9/16/09 1:39 PM

I was recently given an IBM laptop, with xp pro installed on it. as i suspected the xp pro on it was not the original os and obviously will not pass genuine validation.
I have the original key for the home edition that was on the machine but not the original disc. Can I use my own disc to do a fresh install but use the original key that came with the machine.

Unlikely ...

that an IBM OEM key will work with your disk. Especially if the key is for XP Pro and the disk is XP Home; that makes it very unlikely.

I shouldn't even try, because if it doesn't work, you've got nothing (unless you made an image first).

The original os was xp home - I have the product key for the original os, however someone at some time had loaded the machine with a booleg copy of xp pro.
What i want to know is can i reinstal xp home using the original product key from the original os installed on the machine, but use a disc that belongs to me?

a little tricky, but i got it to work.
the disc formatted the drive, and installed xp home using the original key from the laptop, but as it does not instal the proprietry ibm software i had to download things like ethernet drivers from another pc, in order to get unline to both activate windows and install updates.
so far so good.
