dosx error

I am using Windows XP Pro for about two years now and the only problem I have is when i try to load certain programs I get the error message "The WIN16 subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DosX.exe must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and Present in your Path" can anyone tell me what it means and how to solve the problem Thanks
