I was checking out the Wall Street Journal today, and a little throwaway sentence from Rupert Murdoch caught my eye:
"He also said the company is mulling plans to charge online subscriptions for Hulu, the video Web site that News Corp. launched with big media partners including NBC Universal."
Yeah, I saw this. I understand the WSJ iPhone app also going to a paid service model. I guess it is just a sign of the times.
so help me God, heads are gonna roll.
The purpose of Hulu was really to compete with piracy. If people are watching video online for free, NBC might as well get money out of it. This is just going to make them totally uncompetitive and increase torrent use.
I mean, they already have iTunes for paid content, this is needless duplication. They need to be building up their online video marketshare, not going after short term pennies. It is a growing market that I'm sure in several years or decades will be as important as over the air broadcast.
It's no surprise Murdoch is saying this, he's just as clueless about the newspapers.
I think it's safe to say that you wouldn't mind 1/10000th of his cluelessly-generated net worth ![]()
The expert and experienced war winning ww1 generals in France trying to deal with the younger innovative German generals who invented mechanized warfare, ie blitzkrieg. A new paradigm often makes fools of past geniuses. But we'll see.
It's not like he operates in a vacuum. He has plenty of younger, savvy people working for him that understand the net and the models involved.
You mentioned printing presses. He absolutely forsees the day when all "newspapers" will be digital-only. He actually LOVES that idea because it does away with those pesky unions (his regard for them) he has to deal with. See here:
