Amanda,
Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, and any other information you think might be helpful. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be
In the meantime, have you tried the procedures to extract and replace the files per the instructions in Cursorcowboy's post at the link below? If you can't find the missing files on your hard drive, then you'll probably need the Windows XP CD to get it done.

Hope this helps.

Grif, many thanks! I'm no computer newbie, but got here when my autoexec.nt disappeared. Your suggestion
to get a copy from directory I386 worked! It was corrupted for some reason, contained unprintable chars, but its very existance after my reinsertion to
the Windows\System32 dir got dos functioning back again. So thanks!
BTW, it happened just after I installed Broadband (called where I live WOW!) and I think I saw something that accuses WOW of the vanishing of the file ... worth examination!
i to am having the same problem, i read Grif's reply but i found it hard to understand. Can some one please help me?
If you read the entire discussion, you find that it took Grif, Cursorcowboy and myself each helping with various aspects of this issue.
Sadly, it's not an easy thing for a newbie to fix, but at least it's not impossible.
For your part, study all the discussion.
Bob
i have studied this discussion and still no luck. I have tried window fix's etc. copying and pasting the dam file. Why does it not work, does my pc hate me or somein?
i have studied it again and the certain stuff i dont understand like the @echo thing? wht do i do? iam just wanting the same results as Becca a working pc
I too am having this same problem and am not a newbie. I have tried everything in this forum and anywhere else I can find and still nothing works. My OS is Win2k. I reimaged my system and everything worked until I installed the security patches from Microsoft. I now cannot figure out which patch is causing the problem. I have 55 other systems in my office running Win2k and would like to figure this out before I have to reimage all 55.
And to Help Me - don't worry about the @echo thing, just type it in where Bob or whoever has listed it.
thanks for the tip but I saw that last night and tried with no luck...Frank:-)
Just wanted to let everyone know that I found the fix for my problem, same as everyone else but Microsoft fix not working. The security patch giving this much grief was 840987.
Those that were unable to fix via Microsoft's KB, might try to uninstall this security patch.
This does not pertain to XP only 2K.
Same problem caused by spyware or virus, probably downloaded during WWW work. Go to MS main site and download Adaware-SE spyware. Use that software to delete all items pertaining to windupdate in registry and elsewhere; these items may have corrupted your system, as it did did mine. My search of websites also addressed this issue. I removed all directories and files pertaining to windupdate,(using Adaware), emptied recycle bin, and cleaned up registry using Adaware spyware (free), used AVG (free) to clear all viruses, cleared C:/temp and restarted windows in XP. All Dos programmes started OK without error messages and no more need to copy over autoexec.nt from C:/windows/repair etc. at each reboot.
Hope this helps; it took me almost 2 days to resolve the issue.

I just had the same problem with my desktop that was running Windows XP Service Pack 2. I did exactly as it said on the Microsoft website and it didn't work. But I realized my laptop has Xp SP 2. So if you copy the files (autoexec.nt and config.nt and maybe the cmd.exe file) of another computer running the same os (exactly) you should be able to remove this problem. Remember that the command.com file is only in only the beginning MS operating systems and does not come in OS's after Windows 95. The file is now called CMD.exe and it's in windows\sevicepackfiles\i386. You're looking for the cmd file.
I know this will work.
Seraphim, You should have a copy of command.com in your System32 folder along with a copy of cmd.exe. They are both standard, viable Windows XP files.

Do a search for autoexec.com. You will probably find it in C:\WINDOWS\repair. Copy and paste it into C:\WINDOWS\system32. This will fix the problem.
I want to know. The structure of details in autoexec.nt. Because when I install any programs. I get error messages concerning this often too. Tell me. Which website I can download from
Thank you so much
