I recently got a 2nd hand Razr.
I plug it into my computer with a mini-usb cable and it still wont turn on.
I've read that the phone must be on to charge from USB, but if the battery is dead how can I turn the phone on? Does USB also act as the power supply when its plugged in?
For instance: Can you plug a phone into USB with no battery and have it turn on?
Im trying to decide if this phone is defective.
Thanks!
Since you are trying to decide if the phone is dead or not, before you spend any money, I suggest you try the instructions in post #25.

I returned my less-than-one month old V3 to Cellular Choices today as the charger that came with the phone failed to charge batteries.
I can access the files in my V3xx by using a mini usb to usb cable and plugging it into vista but it will not charge without the drivers.
To charge the V3xx via PC usb port you need these first and the phone should be turned on. Also you sould be plugged directly into the PC and not though a USB hub or keyboard. The PC connections should be "root hubs" and supply .5 amp while passive usb hubs and keyboards only typically allow .1 amps.

I found an old version of Phone tools for $4 online. It upgrades to the current version. It takes a while since it upgrades through each old version first.I had to do 5 or 6 upgrades to get it to the newest version.Beats paying motorola $30-$40 for something that should be free. They should learn from Nokia.
