I was downloading a file in Mozilla Firefox and then canceled it. The temp was left on my desktop. When I tried to delete it, message appeared that the file does not exist. But the icon is still there.
How do I remove that thing from my desktop?
ran tuneup utility and other error checking tools but none helped.
thanks
See if restarting the computer removes this ghost icon.

I was downloading a zipped file. It's the temp file that is created with the original file, when downloading in firefox.
the file is also in desktop folder but cannot delete it.
message: "Cannot find this item"
but the icon is there.
so I can only suggest you Google the words Vista icon on Desktop cannot be deleted. I have found a few discussions elsewhere about similar problems, and they all have different suggestions. Perhaps one will work for you, eg;
Social.MSDN.Microsoft.com Can't delete Desktop icon.
Forums.Techarena, cannot delete two Desktop icons.
Windows64.forums Can't delete file off Desktop.
Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you.

- You go into Computer or Windows Explorer, find your Desktop folder, set it to Detail view.
- You see the file xxx.zip
- Right-click delete gives an error message "cannot find this item"
First thing to do: chkdsk to see if the filesystem is corrupted. It might just disappear. If not, follow the links Mark gave.
Other tricks:
- Go into command mode, cd to your desktop folder and give the command del *.zip (meaning: delete all zip files)
- Move the file to a new folder (if it can be moved) and delete that folder
- Take ownership of the file and try again
