When you'll learn that it's completely unproductive to shout us with allcaps, may be your arguments will be considered. You violate the netiquette, so you discredit yourself by doing this here.
I JUST HAVE TO POINT-OUT THAT IT'S SO VERY UNWISE TO RELAGATE THE USE OF (great looking & superior) CAPs TO JUST 'SHOUTING'!
WHO THE HECK EVER NEEDS TO 'SHOUT' WITHIN THEIR NORMAL WRITINGS ANYHOW?
YOUR SILLY "netiquette" RULE WAS (originally) JUST MEANT FOR 'chatting'!
AS IT HELPED GET POINTS ACROSS FASTER, FOR THE MAJORITY WHO ARE NOT GREAT TYPISTS.
IF THE LIKES OF MYSELF WERE TO ALL FALL-IN-LINE AS ALL THE SHEEP HAVE DONE, AND LET THE LIKES OF YOURSELF PUSH YOUR SILLY RULES OUTWARD ON TO NON-chatters, THEN BEFORE LONG YOU'D ALSO BE JUMPING ON US (CAP users) FOR NOT SPELLING "GREAT" AS: 'gr8' , ETC.,ETC.!
I'LL NOT BE A PART OF ASSISTING TO TAKE ANY STEPS TO ENFORCE FAD-RULES WHICH MAY CRIPPLE OUR LONG ESTABLISHED WRITTEN-LANGUAGE FOR FUTURE USERS, (when the use of CAPs will then likely be needed for a much, much more important use, [than for just when somebody feels that their writing must 'shout'])!
I WAS TAUGHT IN SCHOOL MANY DECADES AGO TO USE ONLY CAPs!
I AGREED THEN THAT THEY WERE INDEED SUPERIOR, AND HAVE EVER SINCE AND ALWAYS WILL PREFER TO USE THEM!
FOR THOSE WHO GET BENT-OUT-OF-SHAPE WHEN-EVER THEY SEE ALL CAPs, I CONTEND THAT THEY HAVE SOME SORT OF MENTAL-ISSUE.
THIS JUST IS NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH AN ISSUE TO POST ONE'S GRIPES ABOUT IT, WITHIN THESE FORUMS!
but i'm certain they have no relationship to the fact that for the majority of Cnet members ALL CAPS is both annoying and difficult to read
so, for the sake of 'netiquette' and to prevent this whole section of the thread being sidetracked into a 'mines bigger than yours' contest
kindly refrain....thank you
jonah

This is a request to STOP the discussion of all or no CAPS. It is rather childish to say one is better than the other. My 75 year old no glasses eyes can read both, but the slightly larger ALL CAPS is better for size whereas the lower case leaves more white space which does make it easier to follow. Since I believe that most of us joined this forum to learn about problems with our computers, could we please have a cessation of CAPS?
ThankYou Rocket40 !
HOPE THAT ALL FOLLOW YOUR GOOD ADVICE/REQUEST! _ (i guess i'm REALly shouting this time.)
verdyp: I've been through this with Good-PC.Guy! before.
He is obtuse and belligerent; steadfastly clinging to his belief that he can do whatever he wants to, whenever he wants to, because he doesn't subscribe to the beliefs of the sheep (that would be you, me, and everyone else that observes the proper rules of netiquette). He diagnoses anyone that challenges him with having mental issues (I never did catch the name of the school that granted his degree in psychiatry or psychology). Also he said that, "I WAS TAUGHT IN SCHOOL MANY DECADES AGO TO USE ONLY CAPs! " I don't know what school that was, but I think the school anthem was "Dueling Banjos" from the movie "Deliverance."
We "sheep" should leave the Doctor alone.
Hey, you'd think his screen name would be GOOD-PC.GUY! instead of Good-PC.Guy! ![]()
YES ACTUALLY, IN THE SCHOOL I FIRST ATTENDED IN THE EARLY '50s, THE LETTERS THAT WE WERE ALL FIRST TAUGHT TO READ & USE, INDEED WERE ALL CAPS ONLY! ... THEN AFTER WE WERE WELL ON OUR WAY TO BEING ABLE TO READ, WE WERE THEN EXPOSED TO THEIR small VERSIONS!
THEN IN HIGH-SCHOOL'S MECHANICAL-DRAWING CLASS, WE WERE ALL TRAINED TO USE ONLY CAPS! _ AND I SOON CAME TO LIKE THAT VERY MUCH! _ AND HAVE STUCK TO THAT EVER SINCE!
ONLY UNIMPORTANT WORDING DESERVES small-lettering! _ CUZ IT IS IN FACT ACTUALLY THE HARDEST PRINT TO READ!!
IF YOU THINK YOU BELIEVE OTHERWISE, THEN YOU HAVE TO FACE THE FACT THAT YOU'VE BEEN BRAINWASHED! _ PURE & SIMPLE!
AND YA MUST FACE THE FACT THAT YA MUST NOT BE A VERY GOOD READER, IF YOU CAN'T READ BOTH TYPES OF LETTERS EQUALLY!
IT REALLY SHOULDN'T TAKE MUCH BRAIN-POWER FOR ANY SELF-THINKING PERSON TO REALIZE THAT THOSE SILLIER OF THE 'netiquette' RULES CAN NOT LAST FOREVER,
UNLESS ALL SHEEP BECOME PERMANENTLY BRAINWASHED TO ACCEPT SUCH.
AND ALSO, IT DOESN'T ACTUALLY TAKE ANY TYPE OF BRAIN/MIND-DOCTOR TO CONCLUDE THAT SOMEONE WHO GETS A HEADACHE BY JUST TRYING TO USE THEIR EYE-BRAIN (in an unusual manor), MIGHT POSSIBLY HAVE SOME SORT OF MENTAL-ISSUE!
I'VE NEVER CLAIMED THAT THE NORMAL-USE OF BOTH LETTER TYPES IS IN ANY WAY WRONG,, ONLY THAT THAT'S NOT FOR THE LIKES OF MYSELF!
ByTheWay, I'VE NEVER WRITTEN ANYTHING MEANT TO BE TAKEN IN A NEGATIVE LIGHT!
THOSE WHO HAVE DONE SO ANYHOW, HAVE MISTAKENLY READ JUST AS THEY SEEMED TO HAVE PREFERRED TO DO.
There are four widely recognized commercial products for making an image backup:
1. Norton Ghost
2. Acronis True Image
3. PowerQuest Drive Image
4. Vista Ultimate has this function as part of the OS. In Windows 7, I believe it will be in Ultimate, Business and Home Premium, and maybe even Home Basic
PowerQuest Drive Image is no longer on the market; PowerQuest (which also published "Partition Magic") was bought by Symantec (Norton) and the technological "guts" of Drive Image were put into Norton Ghost. However, copies of Drive Image 7 can still be found, and, personally, that's my first choice if you are running XP.
Of Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image (TrueImage?), both have their fans and the products are largely similar but among the people I know, the Acronis product is more widely preferred.
The built-in OS product in Vista Ultimate has the advantage of being free, but it's less versatile and capable than the separate commercial products, and as far as Vista is concerned, it's only present in Ultimate. But this will change in Windows 7.
There are some non-commercial products, but when it comes to buying OS-level survival tools on which your data, your job and who knows what else may depend, I prefer the fully supported commercial products.
To start a computer with a disk drive, was to insert the boot disk in drive A and start over.
I just did a reformat and reinstall on an 11 year old win98 machine, 6GBhd 384MB ram. I have used it daily at my shop since 1998. It runs Auto repair software, MS Office, Firefox, Brother MFC printer, Canoscan LIDE35 scanner, Camera and image software. It stays connected to the internet and does not run ANY malicious software detection or virus scanning. I Accidentally downloaded a nasty Browser Hindrance Object and it was the only resort. That's 11 years of near 24-7 use, plus 3 power supplies, before a reformat and reinstall.
Just depends, I guess, on what gutters one drags their equipment through...
Hi,
Is there a program for Windows that automatically and periodically creates images of the entire disk and gives you the opportunity to reach/search any file individually in those images like TimeMachine on MacOS? Thx...
Watzman mentioned about 4 different image backup software but I don't think any of them has this feature.
Cheers,
Berkay
I found out that Acronis True Image Home 2009 has "Text Search" support for filenames inside archives using Windows Search or Google Desktop Search.
And the upcoming product Acronis True Image Home 2010 has a new feature called "Nonstop Backup" Using this you can roll back your files, folders or entire system to any time in the past. Also it has online backup support for storing your images in another computer, for instance Acronis' servers. The "Universal Restore" function allows you to restore to different hardware or to a virtual machine. You can enter the Beta II phase here: http://www.acronis.eu/homecomputing/products/trueimage/beta/
I like to use Macrium Reflect Free edition. It's very user friendly and seams to do the job very quickly.

TeraByte's Image For DOS - (Does more than DOS including any Win install).
and Acronis' True Image
Fsarchiver will safely image all file systems and any OS. Run it from CD or memory stick to ensure no access conflicts occur. It is on the "system Rescue CD" free from the sourceforge.
Rob.
The free version makes an image of a complete partition or drive. (It can't do incremental or differential images.) If what you need is one or two images to return your system to a point in time, Reflect does it for free.
The paid version ($40) does incremental and differential images, and you can choose the folders and files to back up.
You can mount the image in Windows Explorer as if it were a separate drive, and explore it just like you would any other drive. You can copy folders and files from the image and paste them wherever you like.
Easy to use, very reliable, great technical support.
