Hi there! I'm on the fence for upgrading to a PS3. I already own a xBox 360 and Wii, but would like a machine that I can use to stream web video to my 55" 1080P LG. I already know that Hulu is turning their backs on basically everything except actual computers. But does anyone have first hand reports of how the PS3 browser handles web video from actual TV network web sites? Fox, NBC, etc? If the browser on the PS3 handles them well, then maybe not having Hulu is fine, especially at $299. Otherwise I'll spend a bit more and get a Mac Mini. Thank you!
It's impossible to say, because streaming video is affected by much more than just the device you stream the content to. And the video content is likely going to be fairly low resolution, and trying to scale that up to 1080p is going to look like crap. The best you could hope for out of the PS3 is that it will make it at least watchable with a couple truckloads of post-processing applied liberally.
I would say you're getting your hopes up for something that is destined to be a disappointment whether you go with a PS3 or Mac Mini. Try taking a YouTube video sometime, and play that on your TV. It'll look awful, and that is about what you can expect from other sources.
I've used my MacBook to watch Hulu, Fox.com, NBC.com, ABC.com, Discovery Channel contect, Sci-Fi (or Syfy) when plugged in via HDMI to my 32" Vizio in the living room. Most tv web sites full episode video looks perfectly fine. Since we don't have cable, that is mostly how we watch TV. I'm more interested in if the PS3 can actually VIEW these full episode video files. With the recent Hulu issues and several posts I've ready about Flash performance on Wii and PS3 I want to make sure I can at least open up the sites and see for myself.
Tried Google? Something like "Playstation 3 and streaming video" then maybe some of the individual networks maybe if you need to narrow down the results a little.
I still suspect you're going to be less than thrilled with the results, but it's your money to spend on it.
