I want to buy a portable DVD player for my son (his request) but he wants one that is multi-region and must play both PAL and NTSC discs. Are there any such beasts out there? Any advice will be much appreciated.
For example such things are found in Australia but are banned from sale in the US except if said product is sold "off the radar."
Good hunting but depending out the country you are in, such can be illegal and thus no retailer would dare put such on sale.

Head to an ethnic neighborhood with a lot of immigrants and you can find models which are legal to purchase. They merely have different firmware. Big box stores typically do not carry such unrestricted portable DVD players though.
FWIW, I'd recommend one of the LG portables which you can often find @ amazon.com. The LG DP781 plays NTSC & PAL quite well. Here's a link since it's getting hard to find-

There's a firmware you can download and run to remove region codes which does not break any U.S. laws per se. Another retailer/etailer called 220depot.com (near O'hare airport actually) carries a decent selection of code free players-
