Whole Drive Encryption of Dell 1550 using TrueCrypt

by tango_fox1 - 8/6/09 7:37 AM

I recently bought a Dell 1550 and am thinking about encrypting the whole drive using TrueCrypt. I have done this before on a desktop which I assembled myself but what concerns me is recovery partition on the Hard drive and a warning about writing to track 1. Can this be safely done? I am also querying TrueCrypt support.

Assistance greatly appreciated.

You're right.

Tell more about your backup and disaster planning. I've found ALL encryption methods to throw wrenches into the works when we didn't have a good disaster plan.

You ask if it can be safely done. The answer is yes. If we have a few backup copies to recover with.

Backup Plan

Well I use the laptop as essentially client file viewer. I don't store files permanently on it. I only load them when I have to see a client. But I also backup daily to my main computer and external HDD. Am looking to get a good formal backup program like Ghost or something similar.

Just a note the backups are also encrypted.

The program files I have the disks for, the settings for Photoshop, Illustrator, iTunes etc are backed up to my Main every evening.

The only flaw is that I don't have the OS / DELL disks because it was a last showroom one and I bought it at great discount.

Then you have an IMAGE to restore with?

Dell disks or not, if you have a good backup that could survive a hard disk failure then there is no risk.

When you say Image do you mean an ISO or like a NORTON GHOST Image? I'm thinking NORTON Ghost Image but I just wanna confirm.

Btw are there other options beside NORTON? I liked the interface of the anti-virus but found it very memory intensive for a background app and don't need a Ghost to be so memory intensive. I have tried to find inexpensive(FREE) apps to do this but I can't seem to find any.

That would be your choice.

Well I used the Macrium Reflect to backup the computer and have Encrypted with TrueCrypt and thus far, no worries. Still do a weekly backup for safety purposes though.

Thanks R.Profitt
