Clicked on spam site by mistake

by 1Chris - 9/2/09 8:01 PM

I was intending to click on 'see full email headers' when my mouse slipped and up came this vile website. Do I need to do anything to clean this machine if it picked up some cookies or anything else?

Empty your temporary internet files...

using third party utility CCleaner. That will get rid of unwanted cookies also. Run a scan using your anti-malware... just to double-check that nothing slipped in.

It'll also get rid of cookes you want, if any. Persoanaly, I find this part of CCleaner a pain. Sites I go to regualry no longer configure corectly when I get there.
Odds are, the cookie you got is harmless.

The link he has clicked may have spyware or adware sent on his PC. How you can say cookies will not be harmful?

What harm could a cookie do?

It's just a piece of text. Here's an example of a random one from my cookies folder:

Let's suppose that you are a criminal with full access to my PC. In what way would you use this cookie to execute your very criminal activities?

I'm not a criminal that I would get full access to your PC.

ANW have you heard about "tracking cookies"?

I'm not convinced ...

of the ability of cookies than doing more than remembering some data for that site (most will be only session cookies) or enable advertising agency's to fire targeted advertisements to me, which might be annoying, but isn't harmful.

Say, I visited a malicious porn or malware site. And, say, that leaves a cookie on my PC, like the one philips.nl left in my post above. What harm could other sites do with it? Can you explain in laymen's terms?

by paul_saute - 9/4/09 8:25 PM In reply to: Clicked on spam site by mistake by 1Chris

Hi sfc90,

You don't say what browser you use.

In any case, you can clear cookies using the Internet Options and to find out how, click HELP and search for erase cookies. Of course, It will get rid of the useful cookies as well.

bye,

Do this

by DKT27 - 9/5/09 7:05 AM In reply to: Clicked on spam site by mistake by 1Chris

Remove the cookies normally. Use CCleaner. Clear the cache if FF or Temporary Internet Files in IE.

Scan your PC with MalwareBytes Anti Malware.
