My suggestion will work on a PC with Windows XP operating system. Right click on each port and uninstall. All ports should be uninstalled. Then reboot. It will be ok.
That is a great suggestion, I had never thought of uninstalling the USB ports themselves. This could also help identify if you had a problem with all USB ports or just some ports, such as on an add on card.
Thanks,
Tom
After palying with it I always get it to work usually in the original port that said it could not detect. I have the most often problem with my Sandisk Cruzer 32GB.
Here's one problem I've found specifically with thumb drives: I sometimes can't read a file copied from my work computer to a Lexar thumb drive on my home computer. When I plug it in at home, the new drive is briefly recognized but then disappears. I've discovered that it's due to a bad FAT (file system entry). I thought I was pretty religious about always using the "Safely Remove Hardware" utility, but I guess not. Windows XP (and I assume Vista) has an automatic CHKDSK app which will repair disks with broken file chains and corrupted pointers. Mine popped up automatically; use it and the drive will be recognized again.
Check the com port settings for the USB slot you normally use. sometimes USB devices set up this the come setting and will only work on the port you initially installed it on. I use my laptop for audio recording, and when I connect my USB interface, it has to reinstall on that particular slot.
you could always just install the device on all your usb slots.
Peace
I suggest that you plug the drive in then do a restart this might work
cheers kiwi
I don't know if this is what happens to you, but I've had a problem with an MP3 player. Plug it in, and the PC didn't see it. I finally remembered to look into Device Manager, where it turns out that the device had a yellow question mark on it. I uninstalled the driver (which does not remove the install files from the PC), reinstalled (both from the Device Manager), and when it came back the question mark was gone, and the MP3 player once again connected normally.
i had this same issue w/ a flash drive myself. i could only use it on ONE computer at the school i taught at..... AND THEN IT DIED.
1) i had it attached to my key chain
2) my computer at home was a much newer computer than the junk i was working on at school/work
"we" came to the conclusion that the drive itself eventually just wore out and that I may also have damaged the physical drive by letting it "hang" from the machine w/ the extra weight attached
I've found an small program USBDeview http://www.nirsoft.net/ and helps me to unmount and uninstall the devices with problems, it works from WinXp and Vista and even Win 7. You must run it as an administrator in order to get uninstall privileges.
I found u.s.b. devices to be so unreliable w.r.t. to connectivity that I had decided to stop using them. I could never count on them to work if I connected them to a hub. If I connected them directly to the back of the computer I had to make sure they were always plugged into the exact same port when reconnecting them.
Then someone told me about powered u.s.b. hubs. I bought a hub that gets it power from the a.c. outlet from the public utility. Now I can count on my devices to work no matter which port they are plugged into.
Since you are using a laptop its quite likely that you don't have regular access to power and even if you do you may not want to carry a powered hub around.
I have never heard of any other solution for u.s.b. problems. If someone has one please post as there are lots of people anxiously awaiting.
Don't have an answer exactly, but i've experienced this problem mostly when running off the battery, i just assumed maybe the ports weren't getting enough juice to run the usb devices. I'm running a four year old Compaq nc6220. You can try cleaning the contacts on the ports and device with a little contact cleaner, i've noticed this helped.
It`s will happen to everyone. Someday you`ll find your USB Connection is not being detect by PC.
1. It could be caused by obsolete usb hub or your USB device is in last year of its function.
2.Maybe your PSU is not working as it used to be beside changing your Power Suply Unit on your PC Try this, buy an electric hub that consist of four USB Port than plug your USB device into the hub and don`t forget to plug the electric cable first than plug your devices maybe it will solved your problem (depending on the cause of it)
You don't say what OS you are using. But, probably, it is WinXP.
Basically, Windows reserves USB slots (physical) for whatever was first plugged into it (or most recently plugged in, if you've booted from a dead stop/turned off machine). I'm saying this from memory, not quoted.
To cure this problem, go into Device Manager, Human Interface Devices, and remove any objects in there that you know are not plugged in. E.g., your USB thumb drive that is in your pocket.
Once you remove USB objects that aren't being used, you should find that whatever you plug in to your USB port is recognized.
1. If you have not already done so, check that your drivers are up to date.
2. Are all USB ports USB2.0? if not the device may require USB2.0.
3. Are you able to run any device on each of your USB ports? If nothing will work on a given USB port then it is probably a warranty issue.
4. Have you checked the hardware and installation requirements in the documentation of your device? Some devices will not work with a generic USB driver.
I own a Compaq laptop & had ALL 3 PORTS go out. It started like you said with on & off problems till they would not detect anything.
I spent HOURS w/ techs trying to fix the issue, new drives etc. I was told to contact HP.
Before I called them I asked a repair tech in a shop about it & he turned to me and said "It's a Compaq Laptop isn't it?" I WAS SHOCKED!
I contacted HP & they ADMITTED this is an issue w/ several of their laptops! They said the only thing was to send it in & they would REPLACE them.
I was so happy they did not lose any of my info because I was told w/ SOME the motherboard needs replaced thus allot of programs are lost.
It came back in about a week & everything works fine now.
HP + COMPAQ LAPTOP + PORTS FAILING = manufacture problem! SORRY!
