how to email large files

by sfc90 - 8/10/09 3:20 PM

Is it possible to somehow email files >10mb? I constantly have to create powerpoint presentations for class and a lot of the times the files end up being too big to send.

Break'em up . . .

by Coryphaeus - 8/10/09 6:13 PM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

Oh. You didn't tell us what email you are using.

If you're using OE you can break the large files up into pieces that will reassemble at the other end. It's all automatic. But we don't know what your email is.

Tip: Google Docs.

I'm using Google Docs for this. I can upload and download via that.

Free so far.

Compress files

by ars408 - 8/11/09 2:34 PM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

Try FILEminimizer office.. Compressing files doesn't change the file format like zipping would and it ensures that you'll be able to send your attachment without having to worry about maxing out your recipients inbox storage.

http://www.filecart.com/details/42632/544/FILEminimizer_Office.php <-- You should be able to get a free trial from there.

Mediafire or possibly, a campus/university repository

by Pepe7 - 8/18/09 2:24 PM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

I've used Mediafire.com with good luck for accessiblity. Does your college/school have any sort of document sharing site you could utilize? That's becoming fairly common, as well as Google Docs which has been suggested.

Pedro

Use YouSendIt to send large attachment

by StellaPat - 9/4/09 1:44 AM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

YouSendIt is a good choice to send large attachment, it offers plug-in for Outlook, also you can try to convert PowerPoint to Flash(.swf) with third party software like FlashPoint to compress the file while keep all the PPT animations, transitions.

FTP

by paul_saute - 9/4/09 7:41 PM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

Hi sfc90,

It seems that you don't chek your answers too often...

Be that as it may, if your do this regularly (in a professional context) you may be interested in using an FTP Internet site.

FTP = file transfer protocol.

You place very large files in the FTP directory, then you advise the people who want to download the file by e-mail and allow them temporary acces to download the file, usually to the order of 2 or 3 days. They download the file & everyone is happy.

Use KGB.

Use an Online File Storage site

by TheCoolPrince - 9/7/09 9:37 AM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

Hi. If you want to send files greater than 10 MB over the net to other people, just search in Google for online file storage sites. There are many sites which allow uploading a file and then storing it there for others to download.

Some of the preferred ones are:

www.wikifortio.com
www.megaupload.com
www.rapidshare.com

Just search for 'web hosting sites' and you'll find plenty of sites. Hope this helped.

Mediafire.

by DKT27 - 9/7/09 11:49 AM In reply to: Use an Online File Storage site by TheCoolPrince

Of course the site you have posted are great. I would Like to add mediafire.com in it. As it doesn't have a free user countdown and the files doesn't get deleted.

Thank you for adding another site! :)

Thank you very much for suggesting one more site. Even I didn't know of that one and will keep it in mind. :) Thank you.

Further explanation for the asker.

by TheCoolPrince - 9/8/09 7:01 AM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

As I was in a hurry last time I didn't properly explain what you had to do.

Just go to one of these web hosting sites and you'll find an Upload option, use that option and upload your file. Once you're done uploading, the site will display a url (or a link) which is the link for you to download that file. Just copy the download url and send it through email to your recipient and they can copy that url in their Browser's address bar and download the file.

Hope this helped, and thanx to others for further input. :)

Send Large Files Securely

by Chris_Vaughn - 9/10/09 5:39 AM In reply to: how to email large files by sfc90

I know what you mean, when you can’t send your large powerpoint files it’s a huge annoyance. Most email servers won’t carry attachments larger than 5-10MB. Earlier I was facing the same problem. Now when I want to send large files I use sendtoperson.com. I can send files for free and there are no ads or spam. It’s secure and pretty easy to use.

As a consultant, I like to use this service because they let me use my own domain name, which looks better when communicating with my clients. When you use your own domain you can completely customize the site to look however you want. I hope this helps.

SendToPerson, etc.

by paul_saute - 9/10/09 4:34 PM In reply to: Send Large Files Securely by Chris_Vaughn

+ SendToPerson +

Here's the catch:

Plan name...Monthly file limit...Monthly bandwidth limit...Price
Free.............5 files..............1 Gigabyte...............free
Professional...unlimited...........5 Gigabytes.............$19.95
Enterprise.....unlimited..........25 Gigabytes.............$99.95

It seems to me that my idea to use an FTP site COULD be cheaper than this solution...

I'll look into it & get back to you

For example, I use Norton Anti-Virus and they have an online backup service - if my memory serves me well, I thought the prices for greater that 5 G. were .6&54%?&*64 high...
