Dual-Boot Advice Using Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows 7 RC

by crewfan69 - 9/2/09 11:42 AM

Hello,

I need some guidance on setting up a Dell Smartstep 250N laptop for dual-boot. As mentioned in the subject I will use Ubuntu Jaunty and Windows 7 RC. I plan on installing Ubuntu first but want to learn about arguments for/against that. I have a new hard drive, increasing capacity from the original 40Gb to 120Gb. Should I partition the drive so each OS has its own area for installation? Or let the installers manage the drive?

I want to make sure I understand this next bit correctly. Whichever I install first, that OS will run faster as it will be placed on the "front" of the drive, closest to the spindle. Yes, no?

If I set up Ubuntu first, then Windows, I will have to (re-)install a bootloader, GRUB maybe? Which do you recommend?

I realize there isn't a right or a wrong way to do this just looking for suggestions which may lead to more questions. This will be a hobby project so I can learn more about Linux, not a critical "mission essential" system.

Thanks,

-Spencer

Prepare the disk

Download and burn knoppix 2007 release first. Use this to resize the NTFS partition. The First partition is for system rescue, be sure not to resize this. You'll have room for two partitions.

I also suggest making boot-rescue CDs of your Windows install.

Using a usb drive- usb cable connected- may be a safer idea. You'll be able to boot without touching the internal disk.

Purchase a usb mouse before installing. Synaptics touch pad drivers may need to be configured by hand.

Good Ideas Porch-a-Geese

I didn't mention that I have been using Ubuntu for a while on the laptop. The touch pad worked without a hitch at the most recent install. I plan to replace the original hard drive which has Jaunty on it presently.

Doing more research I found this -

Should of thought to go to the source before I made this post. So, I plan to change my tactics and install Windoze first and then shrink the volume to leave a bit of free space for Ubuntu.
