Considering a refurbished...

by reggie_46 - 8/23/09 1:40 PM

I'm starting a Tax preparation business that will be mobile. Someone is offing to sell me a refurbished HP Laptop with a Celeron Processor, 512 mem & 40GB. It will have a DVD/CDRW drive, wifi, MS Office 2007, and DVD Fab Patinum. I'm not yet certain what the speed will be.
I will to install the Drake Tax Software, Encryption, and Quickbooks. The size of the Drake is 518 kb and I'm not sure about the other two. My plan is to also have an automatic backup drive, preferrably the Maxtor BlackArmor.

My question: Do you think this notebook would be suitable for starting out?

I'm going with no.

Given new notebooks with 3GB RAM, 160+GB hard disks and new are you really getting this for a comparable value? All your numbers are 1/4 of what a new laptop has so are you paying 25% of new?

You can kick a laptop with a 320 gig hardrive and 4 gig of ram for close to 500. The only thing you get with that laptop is Office and you better get the dvd's it came on to make sure its's legal. Eventhen I'm not sure of the laws on transferring software licensing.

Used PC's

What I've found with use computer is that they are overpriced for what you get from any outlet.

If you watch craigslist or your local equivilent, you may get a fair deal. I paid 125 for a ThinkPad T40 that went for hundred on eBay. The hundreds on ebay would pay for a new HP Laptop at Costco that has better specs even if it's lower end. The T40 may have been "the bomb" back then (it was even used by an accountant) but it's a slugish by todays standards).

Even a low end T400 would work much faster than a T60 and you may find that your refurbished price isn't as good ofa deal as you can find on the Lenovo Refurbished section on a nice T series laptop.
