Hey Buzz Out Loud Gang and Forum,
It appears at least from Walt Disney's perspective, Boys are worth more than Girls when it comes to Entertainment. Walt Disney is buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 Billion Dollars.
Quote from Media Sources:
"The deal, which would help <b>"Disney expand its appeal to boys,"</b> was announced before the market opened Monday; it’s one of the largest acquisitions in Disney history and has the potential to transform the company."

How does the purchase of one company mean that Disney favors boys over girls? I'm not getting that.

The links and the summaries of each are saying that historically Disney has had a problem appealing to boys. This purchase will help them reach out to that demographic.
Again, how in the world does that mean that they favor boys more than girls? It's not a matter of favoritism. It's a matter of trying to find a way to appeal to boys when they are already doing gangbusters (as mentioned in one of your links) with girls.
Let's take a baseball analogy as an example. Say you are a tremendous hitter, but have very poor fielding habits. So, you take extra practice sessions in the field to improve your skill level. Does that mean you "favor" fielding over hitting? Absolutely not. You're doing what you can to improve upon your weak areas.
They're trying to grow their empire into areas they haven't saturated, not dropping girls in favor of boys.
I don't think so girls read comics too. They might think that but I don't think that is true at all.
...but with a little added extra.
Disney's weak in a few areas: teen boys, characters outside of various realms, online, computer games and so on. Online they've been trying to up their game since the disastrous initial attempts and paying over the odds for things like Club Penguin but the buzz around Marvel online comics may well have enticed them.
Similarly they've been trying to grab teen interest with their forays into adventurey type shows/films but so far have little to show for it in terms of public take up bar the Pirates films. Buying Marvel ticks a lot of issues.
Anyhow: Kingdom Hearts style Marvel/Disney mashup in 4 years (three if they can rush it out but hope they don't), cutesy Xmen walking down the character parade in 6 months, Howard and Donald mash up comic pdq and all sorts of content leveraging. Plus the next Xmen opus will be them teaming up with the MU against Maleficent.
Remember that this is the company with the Disney Princesses, Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers, etc... These are all primarily aimed at preteen girls. Quite frankly I have no idea what Disney has aimed at boys right now. Then again, I'm not paying attention to that either. My only window into that world right now are my two little sisters who are both under 10 years of age.
They own ESPN and HBO.
HBO is owned by Time Warner. They do own the ABC TV network, as well as a partial stake in A&E and Lifetime cable.
