Windows Firewall issues

by obersturmfuhrer - 8/29/09 2:11 PM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I seem to be having the exact same issue as this gentlemen.. One minute my system (HP HDX series laptop wireless N card w/ wireless N router w/comcast ISP).. One minute Ill be surfing the internet with absolutely so connectivity problems then, suddenly, its like the connection just DROPS, or the webpages simply HANG. I've tried nearly everything I can from the computer end, flushing DNS, renewing IP addresses, rebooting, etc.. But once it stops working, nothing seems to fix the problem unless I reboot the modem AND the router, then it will work fine, for another indefinite period of time. However, I live in a relatively large house with multiple computers, and doing this 4-5 times per week can get quite tiredsome, needless to say occasionally it will sometimes mis-configure the OTHER comps I have in the house. So, just recently, I noticed that my windows firewall is to blame, so I went into the advanved settings (using windows 7 build 7600 RTM version) of win firewall, and noticed that sure enough Firefox along with other problematic programs were DISABLED or BLOCKED by the firewall. I've just enabled them, so we will see how that goes now. Make SURE your firewall settings are set to make exceptions that you will be using programs inbound/outbound for.. Because the Firewall is very strange, you may be able to use a program that is technically NOT allowed Inet access, for an indefinitite period of time, then suddenly, with no warning win firewall will then block it, which will lead to the page hangs. I'll see if this solves my similar issue to yours, I am hoping bc I HATE walking back and forth to each comp after Ive rebooted the modem and router. Good luck, if you need any more advice or you care to share some please respond!

Scanner 3800

by GEO2003 - 8/29/09 3:45 PM In reply to: Microtek Scanner 3800 by lflores0860

There are no drivers available for Vista or Win 7 for you model.
Vista Drivers would most likely work.

My best recommendation is to installed the XP drivers in Administrative mode.

Create a Restore Point just as a precaution.

If the drivers are on a CD, insert your CD but don't run the executable.

Open Windows Explorer, locate the executable by clicking on the CD/DVD drive. The executable should be located on the root directory.

Right click on the Executable, Select run as administrator. If Win 7 tells you that the drivers are not compatible, you can continue with the installation if Win 7 allows you to.

I can only conclude that you are running Win 7 RC at this point.

If Win 7 allows you to continue, right click on the Executable Icon that is placed on the desktop and select Advance and check mark run as administrator. Also the Compatability TAB will allow you to run the program in XP SP2 Mode or others.

There are drivers for XP on the website, I hope you try with at leat those drivers and not older operating system drivers.

Good Luck

Geo

Little info regarding your scanner compatiblity issue w/Win7

by obersturmfuhrer - 8/29/09 3:49 PM In reply to: Microtek Scanner 3800 by lflores0860

Its difficult to give you a one-step solution to your problem, but the simple fact remains that not alot of smaller companies (or larger for that matter) are producing compatible win7 devices drivers for their equipment, yet, that is.. I had the same problem with a few devices but fortunately after a little work I was able to get them all to work..
-Have you tried going on to the manufacturer's website to see if they have any updated drivers for your scanner?
-Are you using the windows 7 scanner app correctly? (it's not as simple as XP or Vista) Gotta go into control panel-devices-printers & scanners -double click on device and you should see an option to Scan new document. I have Brother MFC 5440CN and it works fine with Win7..
-What build of Win7 are you using? if its a previous build than 7600 then it may be that issue thats causing the device error.
-Try clicking Start-Type in Scan, and you should be able to see Scan a Document or Picture in the search result queries.
-Try rolling back the device drivers, or un-installing them in control panel, then unplug the scanner then re-connect and let Windows 7 automatically install appropraite device drivers.
Anyone one or perhaps none of these troubleshooting tips may work.. good luck my friend, and if you can gather any helpful information on precisely what error message you are recieving from Windows would be helpul in further diagnosing the problem.. Good luck!
Hope this helps..

3800 Scanner - Addition

by GEO2003 - 8/29/09 3:58 PM In reply to: Microtek Scanner 3800 by lflores0860

Check to see if the XP drivers on the website are newer then the ones you have.
If so, use the newer drivers.

When you finish the installation - If it is one executable that runs your entire scanner functionality, that is the one you much makes changes to as per my previous post. Or if there is more then one, all have to be changed.

-Important, if some of your scanner applications set themselves to start up with the operating system, Win 7 most likely will not let this happens.

You will probably get an error message indicating that those applications were stopped.

You don't need them to load at starup - to accomplish this.
Click on the Start button or Orb, click on run, type MSCONFIG, on the start up TAB deselect any application for the scanner, re-boot your pc, makes changes to the executable on your destop and try running the application.

Regards
Geo

How does this effect the intermittent LAN connection

by LionsMike - 9/1/09 9:36 PM In reply to: Microtek Scanner 3800 by lflores0860

I lost something. How does this Windows 7 thing get involved? I don't think the problem with the intermittent connection was even on any computers runing Windows 7.

I suspect your USB adapter.

by Igiveup2 - 8/29/09 3:19 PM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Do I understand correctly that there is no connectivity problem with your laptop?

Hardware problem? Has the USB adapter been jostled at all? Does the problem persist if it is installed in a different USB port? Is there any sign of physical damage at the connection (either the port or the unit itself)?

Software problem? Did the problem start to occur after an update? That's been known to occur in some cases. You also may want to see if there is a different driver available for your adapter. I used to have weak (but consistent) connectivity with an early Vista wireless driver until I installed an updated driver.

If none of that works, try switching out the adapter.

Would add.....

that the earlier poster's suggestion that you look into the possibility of a location-specific interference problem is a good one.

More of a step by step than an answer

by lostinlodos - 8/29/09 4:00 PM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've run into this problem before; both personally and with friends and customers. There are dozens of reasons for loosing connectivity now, after working for so long for you; the most probable being a over-cached router, a failing adaptor, of wireless overload (to many things on the same frequency in close proximity). The most direct way I could give you some advice is a series of step-by-step routes to follow.

The first thing to check is the router and modem.
First unplug the router, the modem, and shut down all computers, game systems, and anything else plugged into your internet connection, via wifi or hard wires.
Next plug in your modem, and wait for it to boot back up, till all the lights are green (orange, yellow, whatever your modems colours are).
Now plug back in your router and count slowly to 30.
Finally turn your computers back on and see if your connection is restored fully.

If that doesn't solve your problems you should try replacing your wireless adapter plugged into the computer. You can get rather reliable USB wifi adaptors now for around $20 or less.

If you still have problems after that you probably need to replace the router or modem.

Finally, if everything else fails, you probably have a signal problem locally.

As an aside, if you're using bittorrent software that alone could be an issue for you, as the number of inbound and outbound connections are astronomical compared to normal computer usage, and many providers will forcefully punt you (send a full reset command) from the network for use during high-traffic times.

He's already tried that solution

by obersturmfuhrer - 8/29/09 6:24 PM In reply to: More of a step by step than an answer by lostinlodos

Thats a good suggestion for a one-time fix. But I believe that the original poster is looking for a PERMANENT solution to this connectivity problem, such as I have as well.. Yeah, sure we can all run to each room in our homes and shut down each system, then run to the modem/router room and reset, that, then re-boot each system.. but doing that over and over and over again can get quite bothersome and annoying. Yeah, 96% of the time it solves the immediate problem, but I think we're looking for a long-term solution to this issue.

Intermittent wireless connection

by Nereus031 - 8/29/09 4:02 PM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had a similar problem a while ago, and it tuned out to be pretty simple. You should check the properties of your wireless card - make sure the option of "allowing this device to turn off to save power" is NOT enabled, i.e. it should be "Constantly awake". Changing this certainly fixed the problem for me.
