Intermittant Wireless

by F1Schumi - 8/29/09 6:58 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had a very similar problem with an older model Linksys router connected to an older model Apple Airport Extreme. Big pain in the neck! I aso got the regular call from my wife and son to FIX THE NETWORK!! I simply updated the firmware on both the router and airport and my problem went away. Just go to the website for the type of wireless access point your have, and download the latest. My configuration worked well for years with four PCs/Macs both wired and wirelessly connected to my network. I added a fifth wireless netbook and new cable modem when my problems started. I know I should have updated the firmware on the router more regularly like I usually do with the OSs, etc. but when things are working, I really wasn't thinking about it!

Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connec

by dahartman - 8/29/09 7:37 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have had this problem ever two and half years, first it was with my G router and than with my (2) N routers. I got duel band router that works on 2.4-GHz & 5-GHz band radio. I don't have to worry about the neighborhood cordless phones interfering with my wireless connection. So after two and half years or so I just replace my router after I start to see acquiring network address a lot I know it time to get a new wireless router. I all so have powerline network adapters on my home network because in the fall and spring something about the Sun interferes with radio waves a few hours a day. Keeping the powerline adapter in the rooms with wireless connection problems keep all happy in the house and I can watch my HD movie, play games (Wii, Playstation & XBox 360) in every room

Wireless intermittent connection

by amax2 - 8/29/09 7:42 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Have you tried un-installing & then re-installing the driver for your USB wireless dongle? Check to see if there is an updated driver for your hardware.

I had a similar issue with my PCI wireless & updating the driver seemed to solve this problem.

USB Wireless adapter

by iJohnE - 8/29/09 7:49 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

From reading your post, it looks to me as though your USB Wireless adapter is going bad. You can pick up a new on for around 20-30 bucks. If that doesn't fix the problem, then you may have to go to some more in depth problem solving.

Diagnose wireless problems

by ken734 - 8/29/09 8:42 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There are several things you can do to troubleshoot this issue. One of the easiest to try first is to change the wireless channel. It could be that you are getting interference that you haven't had in the past and it is causing the problem. If that is the case you can very often solve the problem by changing the channel. Valid channels are 1-11. If that doesn't solve the issue get into device manager and disable the wireless adapter and then re-enable it. If still having problems you you might try resetting the winsock. Do that from the command prompt (in vista run as adminstrator) and use the command: netsh winsock reset - then restart your computer. It is also I good practice to update the drivers in this case the wireless adapter. This seems to be particularly important in Vista since the earlier drivers often had problems.

Wireless problems

by Alan.Shenefield - 8/29/09 10:09 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It sounds like the wireless network card is going out or the Router is getting weaker. Try using the laptop next to the desktop box and check signal strength. You could get a stronger router or buy something like a Netgear XE102 Powerline Ethernet Adapter or XE104. Newegg sometimes has the refurb one for $32, you need two. One for sending and one for receiving. My friend uses them for connecting his laptop when he is out in the garage and in his kids room because he did want to run wires.
They work great and don't seem to lose any bandwidth. Just plug into power outlet and plug Ethernet cable into it, done.

RECENTLY REPLUGED MY KEYBOARD INTO MY DESKTOP, AND WHEN I PULLED MY COMPUTER OUT, SAW THAT THE WIRELESS ANTENA FROM MY PC CARD INPUT HAD TIPPED OVER SO THAT I WAS NOT GETTING GOOD SIGNAL RECEPTION.
ANTENA TIPPED UP AND NOW PROBLEM IS GONE

Re: intermittand interruptions to wireless connection

There are several things that can interrupt a wireless connection. A microwave oven can interrupt a connection when running. A 2.4GHz cordless phone can also interrupt a wireless connection as well as some the humming of a ballast on a fluorescent light fixture. Try moving your router or your computer to a different location and see if that helps.

I have been wireless now for three years. About 8 months ago I started having the same problem. Found out that as wireless became more popular more networks started showing up in the nieghborhood. I finally found a channel that would not get interupted.

WiFi intermittent connection

by toothmkr - 8/29/09 11:19 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Sometimes RF interference is to bame. Items like a microwave oven near by will create a major problem (it works in the same frequency range of 2.45 Mhz). Also, many wireless phones work on the same frequency range & will disrupt. Finally many security cameras unfortunately, you guessed it, work in the same frequency range and can prevent a stable connection... good hunting for these RF sources.

Fix is Probably Simple

by Stillam - 8/29/09 11:21 AM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Likely issue is that router is out of sync with modem or modem is out of sync with cable provider (or both). Unplug power cord from modem. Unplug power cord from router. Wait 30 seconds or so. Plug in modem. Let modem completely settle down. Among other things, it is getting ip address from cable provider. Plug in router. Let it settle down. Among other things, it is getting ip address from modem. Reboot pc. During boot, it will get ip address from router. This should fix problem, but if problem persists in intermittent fashion, modem or router or usb adapter is likely defective. Modems have a typical lifetime of 4-5 years. Your cable provider can usually run some remote tests to check it out, but you may have to use a hard wire connection during the tests. Routers also have a similar lifetime. If modem is OK, try replacing router (with a new router you can return if it doesn't fix problem). Finally, there is the usb adapter, but I think it is the least likely to fail.

it is not your router or modem

by farcry1010 - 8/29/09 2:23 PM In reply to: Fix is Probably Simple by Stillam

dont listen to other posters. It is not your service provider or your modem or your router. Since your laptop connects flawlessly this would rule out the forementioned items. so therefore i would look into switching channels or do something like i said earlier back on page 2 and good luck

...and a totally different angle...

by pepenavarro - 8/29/09 1:49 PM In reply to: Home wireless network connection getting intermittent connections, help! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the same problem after more than 2 years of flawless functioning with same equipment and same setup. After having tried most of the stuff also mentioned here, I called my ISP and asked if something was the matter with their ADSL line. They said it wasn't and went along with me, for a couple of days, through a number of "sophisticated" routines of the type "press the reset button on your broadband modem". None of these helped, and I was now into my tenth day of problems. And then it suddenly stopped! And I was returned to my previous flawless functioning. Maybe my neighbor who is really a CIA agent working under cover stopped transmitting. Or maybe the stars alligned properly. Who knows. Or maybe my call to the ISP triggered their rectifying whatever the fault might have existed on their side.
