The last time I had to format was after an optional Windows update caused Windows Update to stop working. Nothing I tried, even those suggested by Microsoft's tier two support, solved the problem. I reformatted the drive, reinstalled Vista and avoided the fatal update. Since then Vista has been working well; but I know me and I will push it until it breaks, as I have in the past, and I have to do it all over again.
With Win95/98 it was a necessary every so often chore.
With Win 2000Pro it was necessary only once. Grandsons didn't understand shutdown did hard with switch. Scrambled its brain.
Do not have/Will not upgrade to XP, Vista or 7.
I have had mine done twice, window vista, just seem to crash, the last time after reformat all the pring is soooo small, you can't hardly see it, also some of the downloaded games, do you have any suggestions on how to fix it? I have an HP pavialion media center m8300f
had to wipe my system using 'DBAN' 2 years ago, used 'limewire' and had more viruses and spyware than my protection could handle. never again!!!!!!!
hi guys.,
i had a serious problem with my pc recently..due to some serious malware or may be a deadly virus i wasnt able to access my hidden files, my broadband was giving me problem, pc became pathetically slow & various other...finally i reinstalled my os & bought kaspersky antivirus which is the best according to me since for the past 3 months i had no problem at all..thankz..
System error: controller error on \device\ide\ide port 0, did not respond within timeout.
I did so on my older HP 733 MHZ toward the last several years of use to get it to run smoother. Freezing constantly became problem. So the last five years of using it, I reformatted about every six months.
Recently, I had to pull the machine out and use it again since my newer model (2 year old HP a1750y 3GIG) decided to have monitor problems. I found myself reformatting it once again to get it to work better.
Given my experience, I'm beginning to think it should be done at least once a year or so just to tweak the system.
First time was HDD failure. This time after 3 years of great service I somehow got some files corrupted. It did many check disk operations, virus scans etc which didn't fix the problem. I installed my purchased install disk to repair and no go. I have 3 drives for this laptop. OEM XP, XP-Vista dual boot, and Vista. I image XP drive then install the Vista upgrade. I delete legacy XP incompatible programs. Back in business.
I had installed Win7RC as an upgrade and like many upgrade routes for MS OSs, not the better way, so wiped the drive and reinstalled the original Vista that worked better. Waiting for 7 to be released in October and then will wipe and do a clean install of & Professional.
I've been using my computer since 2000. I've never reformatted the HD. I even upgraded from Windows 98SE to XP without a reformat.
You really need to re-format the drive. 98SE uses FAT32 format and XP can use FAT32 but it is happier with the NT format. And a happier OS means a much happier operator (YOU!).
You do realize that you can convert FAT32 to NTFS without reformatting?
Long story short I had missed Windows XP after being on Vista and then Windows 7 for so long, so I formatted and installed Windows XP. I found out that all my time on Vista and mainly Windows 7 had gotten me lost in this world of "My computer simply works, I don't need to do anything but use it.". Well switching back to Windows XP knocked me out of that fast. xD Nothing but system freezes, missing drivers, and so on, not to mention an all over slowness from Windows XP being 32bit and being used to Windows 7 64bit. A week later I decided I'd do a fresh start and wiped everything from all the hard drives after backing up my media drive, cleaned out the inside of the computer and all that till it was like the first day I built it and installed Windows 7 again. I just love the feel of a fresh clean operating system and setting up everything just how I like it.
Note: I am NOT saying Windows XP is bad, it is a very good operating system, I'm just saying if you use Windows 7 for awhile you won't want to go back.
I previously reformatted my PC because of the pesky malware that made it run so slow. Actually that's the main reason why I often reformat my desktop
