OK, I recently bought a ZR950 from woot.com to use for live streaming with my iMac. The camcorder works great, but it refuses to show up on the iMac when I connect it by Firewire. I've tried a different cable, and no change. The iMac is a 2.66ghz 20" model. It's not the latest version, it's the one immediately before it, bought in December 2008.
Does anyone have any ideas? I can't figure out whether it's the iMac or the camcorder at fault, and I don't have any thing else that connects by Firewire.
Thanks!

Does you iMac have a built-in iSight camera? My guess is it takes priority. You will need to turn it off in System Preferences... Or use the built-in iSight camera instead.
Camcorders are not web cams - and using them for that is not "appropriate". They timeout and go to sleep. Web cams don't.
You're right, they aren't webcams, they're much better. The founder of Ustream uses the same model I have for his live stream.
But anyway, I do have an iSight, but shouldn't the camcorder at least show up in iMovie to import video from? And how do you even go about turning off the iSight?

Just for anyone who may find this in the future, the problem has been fixed. It turns out the camera had a bad Firewire connection, so I sent it in to Canon and they fixed it right up. I'm now happily using it to stream video on Ustream!

My Macbook Pro and my PC won't detect the Canon ZR950. I contacted both Canon and Mac support and no good advice was given. The Canon support told me to go to Best Buy and try connecting to different computers with different firewires. I did this and nothing worked. Your conclusion makes total sense, I thought about asking for another Canon ZR950 to test this out but it was getting to be a big hassle.
So how did you convince Canon that they needed to fix the firewire port on the ZR950? And what was the process like?
All you have to do is follow the directions here: https://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=OnlineRepairBookingAct
You just enter your model there and serial number there, and it takes you to a page where you tell them what's wrong with it, etc. You then put your camcorder in a box, I just picked a random one and filled it with bubble wrap. In the box you also put a receipt of some kind, and you print out that webpage and include it too, so they can tell it's the right one.
If you bought it online and don't have the receipt, chances are that the web site will let you print out a new one.
Depending on how long you've had it, it might be out of warranty, which means you'll have to pay to get it fixed, but it's usually a better price than buying a brand new camcorder.
Good luck! ![]()
