Is the $30 / month fee worth it for an iPhone?

by arlingtonpark27 - 8/16/09 2:18 PM

I'm debating between an iPhone and a Samsung Eternity. The Eternity has a $15 per month charge and I'm wondering if it is worth the extra $15 to have the iPhone or if by itself, the iPhone is worth the extra money.

Thanks!

I'm looking to buy one in the next couple of days. Any additional thoughts of whether or not the iphone is worth the extra $30 per month data plan?

I don't have one, but....

I would suggest you see if you can find anyone in your area that owns one. Several of the podcasters on Buzz Out Loud have them and complained about the service, particularly downloading data. Apparently AT&T can't handle the amount of data that Iphone users demand. One of the editors at CNET, Molly Wood, let everyone know she got a Blackberry.

Seems to me that type of complaint is dependent on the area you live, so you should check there unless you travel a lot.

BTW, do you rely on text messages? Can the iPhone handle them? I seem to recall hearing a complaint about them, but I didn't pay much attention since I have a contract on Verizon.

Good luck with your decision.

Coverage,

is, as just mentioned, totally dependent on the area in which you live.

AT&T 3G coverage in NY City is, apparently, pathetic. No problem in my neck of the woods for either Data or Text.

Remember that the iPhone can also use a Wifi connection instead of AT&T and is usually much faster when it does so.

Molly Wood would have purchased a Blackberry even if the iPhone had made her breakfast and driven her to work. Not the most Apple friendly person at CNET.

Best advice so far, talk to someone who has one in your area.

nothing is like the iPhone

I agree with the other posts as far as the service depending on where you live. I live in the Atlanta area and I have never had problems with coverage or dropped calls. I hear many stories about other places, NYC, San Francisco not having good service. All I know is mine works and there is no other phone/internet/iPod device that can do any of these tasks either individually as well as the iPhone, much less in one device. Having a full internet browser either in 3G or wifi keeps me connected and I can safely say it is the coolest piece of technology I have ever seen or owned. Is it worth the extra $15.00 a month to you? My answer is yes without a doubt, but ask yourself what is your coverage area like and how important are each one of these features (iPod, video, GPS, games, internet and phone) to you. I don't personally know anyone who has purchased the iPhone and said it wasn't worth it. I have upgraded each year from the 1G, 3G and 3GS and I'm just as excited with it now as I was when I first brought it home.

Good luck with your choice!

Nothing IS like the iPhone

I have only had my iPhone for a few months and I love it. I was debating changing carriers. I've had good service, not great, from Sprint (for 8 years) with a smart phone (latest - a nice Samsung) but I found myself using it more and more for extra things, Web, texting. (I used to carry a separate iPod because Sprint's / Samsungs music service arrangment was a ripoff - my one complaint with Sprint.) The iPhone I bought is the old 3G, refurbished for $99, not the 3GS (found the deal at Apple on-line before the 3GS came out). The computer connection is so seamless. I love the many additional applications available on the iPhone. That was the clincher for me, books and crosswords are my thing. The cost for the full service package at ATT was only $20 a month over Sprint's full service for individual plan, not family. (maybe different costs for 3G vs 3GS service?) ATT information is easier to deal with than Sprint with the old Samsung phone, things like 411, map service. So I can't exactly compare the iPhone and ATT to the Eternity and Sprint. I'm in the Tampa Bay area and get good coverage - never a problem. The iPhone is trouble free so far. And I hear the local Apple/Mac store is great for customer service if I need it. Unlike many others the iPhone hasn't replaced my laptop. I'm still thinking of getting a NetBook for Internet browsing on the go - for those sites that don't have a mobile version.

Is The Extra Cost Justifiable On The iPhone?

by JCipo - 8/26/09 3:55 PM In reply to: Is the $30 / month fee worth it for an iPhone? by arlingtonpark27

Your question blows my mind. Where....where...WHERE can anyone find service on an iphone for $30 a month?!!! The average user pays $80 a month service for 2 years for the iPhone. I pay $30 a month but I programmed the phone to accept this service but this service is limited.

$30 / month internet/e-mail fee

by arlingtonpark27 - 8/26/09 4:04 PM In reply to: Is The Extra Cost Justifiable On The iPhone? by JCipo

Sorry, I meant the extra $30 per month (above the normal rate) that is required to access the internet. Hope this clarifies.

In Orange County California it is worth it!

by niahartman - 9/3/09 12:03 AM In reply to: Is the $30 / month fee worth it for an iPhone? by arlingtonpark27

Since I have good coverage here there is no problem with data connections. Here is the scoop. 1) I got rid of my clunky, nagging car navigator. I check the route and traffic and go. I can lookup and call stores and restaurants along the way. Usually pizza 20 min down the road. 2) Got into the campground at 1am so I emailed mom a pic of the tent under the stars so she wouldn't worry. I don't like to call her at 1am. 3) I don't wait at my pc for business emails anymore. 4) I listen to NPR and I used to be one of those driveway listeners. I couldn't turn off the program so I would listen in the car in the driveway till the article was done. Now I just switch to KPCC on the iPhone and walk into the store or house still on my favorite station. It pauses for calls then starts where it left off. 5) we are under construction on the house so we don't have TV. I just iTunes all the shows we regularly watch and listen to them anytime (I'm sick in bed now with Psych) 6) I gave my mom the video camera and I don't carry a calculator anymore. I wish my Swiss Army iPhone came in Red with a big siver cross on the back. It still needs a corkscrew. $30 bucks? I save that every time I find an inexpensive movie theater (not listed on Fandango). Hope that helps.
