Apologies if this comes up as double-post; I hit 'preview post' and it disappeared.
Anyway:
Few-days-old Acer Aspire 5735Z running Windows Home Basic. Froze up with a few things running, hit ctrl-alt-del to get to task manager to lighten the load. Picked 'open task manager' or whatever the option is - and it didn't. Just gave me a blue 'Windows Home Basic Screen' (not BSOD, like a start-up screen). Mouse pointer responding, but nothing to click on. No response to any keys, or to power button. Any way to force it to shut down so I can reboot without waiting hours for battery to run down?
Thanks
P
Press and hold the power button until it powers down.
Hey, sorry. Thought I'd held down power key for plenty long enough for it to have an effect if it was going to... after posting, thought, "Oh, well, I might as well try that again," held it down for even longer, and succeeding in shutting down. Feel free to delete thread (or leave as an example for others as clueless as I evidently am...)

I must be as clueless as you then, I thought shutting your computer down like that was considered a Hard shut down and that was not good for the system?
If all else fails, unplug the power cord and remove the battery. When you reinstall the battery and turn on, you will get a message that Windows was shut down improperly and will run a diagnotic program that will clear the error, usually the system will work correctly after the shutdown and reboot.
When my ASUS laptop freezes and will not shut down normally I use a paper clip which I insert into a small hole on the underside of the laptop and this shuts everthing down (this hole is for this purpose) and then I turn the laptop back on the usually way. Other laptops may have this facilty, check your manual.
If, when you reboot, you still cannot access the TASK MANAGER you probably have malware on your computer. That happened to me, including hijacking my desktop images and locking out any way to change that, and the thing that finally cleared it up was when I ran Malwarebytes (free download here on CNET).
If your mouse is working, right-click on taskbar, left-click on Task Manager and there you go. What happened when you clicked <start> <shut down/restart>?
