But then do you have to reinstall all of your other software

by tedbrooks - 8/21/09 11:24 PM In reply to: Reformatting instead of fixing by tbonejr

I can see the advantages of reinstalling your system software upon occasion. But, I've never done it because I've always heard that you also then need to reinstall all of your software again. Is that the case?

I do a complete install of OS and all SW

by tbonejr - 8/22/09 12:58 AM In reply to: But then do you have to reinstall all of your other software by tedbrooks

Yes, installing a new HD does require the reinstallation of all SW, OS and apps. It ends up being a days task, but the reason I do it are for the refreshed HD and cleaned system and drive. I have many clients whom I do work for and I keep all their files on a separate external drive. So the install of SW is pretty straightforward, since I've done it a number of times. I just run through the same process each time and before you know it, I have practically a new machine. Once in awhile, I might throw in more RAM. But it gives me peace of mind that my HD won't just stop working, not that I'm completely safe from that ever happening, but with this type of maintenance, I have 1 less thing on my mind.

Of course, I go through a HD swap after about the year or so and by the next time I'm due, I replace my machine itself. Then another year or so again, the HD gets refreshed. So far, its worked.

Unfortunately, that is the case,, however...

WHEN YOU DO GO TO REINSTALL YOUR OS, YOU MAY AS WELL ALSO INSTALL A NEW & LARGER-SIZE HARD-DRIVE.
HERE'S WHAT I SUGGEST YA DO...
_ PUT AT LEAST THREE PARTITIONS (of differing sizes) ON YOUR NEW HARD-DRIVE AND USE A GOOD CLONING SW-PROGRAM TO EXACTLY COPY YOUR CURRENT HARD-DRIVE'S (entire) 'DRIVE-C', TO ONE OF THE (new) PARTITIONS. _ (THEN YOU SHOULD STILL HAVE YOUR PC JUST AS YOU'VE BEEN USED TO HAVING IT.)
_ THEN AFTER YOU'VE INSTALLED YOUR NEW HARD-DRIVE, USE YOUR OS INSTALLATION-DISK TO INSTALL A FRESH INSTALLATION OF THE OS ONTO ONE OF THE OTHER (new) PARTITIONS.
(THEN YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CAKE & EAT IT TOO!) ...
__ ONCE THIS JOB HAS BEEN COMPLETED, YOU WILL THEN HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS! ... YOU WILL THEN HAVE A 'DUAL-BOOT' SYSTEM, WHICH WILL ALLOW YOU TO HAVE THE CHOICE OF BOOTING TO EITHER YOUR PC'S OLD OS, (your entire software system, still, just as it was), OR, TO BOOT TO YOUR FRESH OS-INSTALLATION (for whatever purpose)!!
THEN YOU WOULD KEEP ALL THE SOFTWARE-PROGRAMS WHICH YOU CURRENTLY HAVE, (just as it's all been), PLUS, YOU COULD THEN INSTALL SIMILAR/ALTERNATE SW-PROGRAMS ON YOUR NEW/FRESH OS, TO TRY-OUT !! _ IT'S LIKE HAVING TWO PCs IN ONE, (your current PC, & another that's like new)!!
__ THE EXTRA (3rd) PARTITION COULD BE USED FOR BACK-UP AND/OR STORAGE,, OR EVEN A THIRD (2nd fresh) OS-INSTALLATION!
HOW GREAT IS ALL OF THAT FOR YA!?

__ FOR SOME MORE INFO ABOUT DUAL-BOOTing, YA COULD CLICK ON MY NAME (at top) AND FIND A LIST OF MY OTHER POSTINGS, (many of which touch on this subject).

I would like to point out

ALL CAPITOLS IS NOT AN ACCEPTED GRAMMATICAL STANDARD PRACTICE FOR WRITING. FOR CENTURIES CAPITOLS HAVE BEEN RESERVED FOR SPECIAL USES. THAT IS THE STANDARD PRACTICE. NETIQUETTE RULES HAVE BEEN AROUND SINCE 1983; WHICH JUST ABOUT SHOWS THE LIMIT OF YOUR INTELLIGENCE.

Post 260 of 298

Meant just for 'pSYCHgEN'...

by Good-PC.Guy! - 8/24/09 1:56 AM In reply to: I would like to point out by PsychGen

WELL PsycG, YOU USE THE WORD "INTELLIGENCE" IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH AS "ALL CAPITOLS" ! _ SO HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT, IN FACT, lower-case LETTERS WERE ALSO INDEED USED (by me) AS WELL!?
ALSO, WHY DID YOU GET ME FOR (the relatively light offense) OF TOO MANY CAPs, YET, LET ME GO ON 'SPELLING' & 'PUNCTUATION'??
__ I WONDER WHAT SCHOOL OR COLLAGE YOU LEARNED YOUR RULES AT?
I GUESS IT DOESN'T MUCH MATTER HOWEVER, AS YOU WILL FIND AS YOU GO THROUGH LIFE THAT RULES WHICH WE ALL LEARN, (and also simply hear of on the net), WILL ALWAYS GET BROKEN SOME WHERE AT SOME TIME! _ AS THERE ARE ALWAYS NON-CONFORMISTS WHO REBEL AGAINST SOMETHING OR ANOTHER WHICH YOU'VE BEEN BRAINWASHED TO BELIEVE IN!

____ I'VE NEVER BEEN A TYPIST AND I'M DISABLED WITH ONLY TWO FINGERS OF WHICH TO TYPE WITH!
I JUST TRY TO BE THE LIGHT-IN-THE-DARK FOR THOSE OF US WHO MUCH PREFER TO READ CAPs!
THE LIKES OF YOURSELF (who get all bent out of shape when ya see even a short string of words done in CAPs), ARE QUITE WELCOME TO SKIP-OVER ANY OF MY POST-WRITINGS, (as they're not meant for people such as you, anyway).
__ I'M GLAD THAT I LIVE IN THE LAND OF FREE-SPEECH, AND I'M SORRY IF YOU DO NOT.
BUT IF YOU DO, THEN IT SEEMS THAT YOU REALLY MUST HAVE TO BE INTO LAW-ENFORCEMENT, AS YOU SEEM TO FEEL THE NEED TO SCOLD FOR EVEN JUST BENDING A MERE TRADITION WHICH MOST EVERYONE NATIVE TO THIS PLANET IS ALREADY SOMEWHAT AWARE OF!
(BUT YOU'D LIKELY BE ONE OF THOSE LAW-ENFORCERS WHO DON'T EVEN CARE MUCH TO FOLLOW THE LAWS FOR THEMSELVES, SINCE YOU COMPLETELY BROKE YOUR PRECIOUS netIQuette-RULE, BY NOT USING EVEN A SINGLE NON-CAP, YOURSELF!)

please have a nice day, (and try not to be such a P.Gen)!

Netiquette @ Good-PC.Guy!

by DefineReality - 8/26/09 1:06 PM In reply to: Unfortunately, that is the case,, however... by Good-PC.Guy!

Despite your selfish reasons for using ALL CAPS, ALL THE TIME, its REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, annoying and hard to read. Get over yourself and use caps judiciously!

_'netiquitte' vs. The Needs of the FEW...

by Good-PC.Guy! - 8/28/09 9:35 AM In reply to: Netiquette @ Good-PC.Guy! by DefineReality

WELL FIRST I MUST SAY THAT IT'S FAIRLY CLEAR THAT (at least) EITHER I, OR, THE POSTER WHO INITIATED THIS SIDE-LINE POST, HAS SOME SORT OF MENTAL PROBLEM! ...
__ WHAT De.Re DOSEN'T SEEM TO GET OR REALIZE IS THAT MY USE OF CAPs IS NOT "selfish" AT ALL! _ AND, THAT MY POSTINGS ARE NOT INTENDED FOR THE LIKES OF SUCH READERS AS HE OR SHE HAS MADE IT CLEAR THAT THEY MUST BE.
IN FACT, IT SEEMS APPARENT (to those of us who are good thinkers), THAT SUCH AN ATTITUDE IS AKIN TO THOSE WHO PROTEST THAT English IS THE ONLY LANGUAGE THAT SHOULD BE SPOKEN WITHIN THE USA. _ IT'S NOT ONLY UNFAIR BUT, THOSE WHO ARE BILINGUAL HAVE A REAL ADVANTAGE IN LIFE! _ AS DO THOSE WHO CAN EASILY READ BOTH CAPs & non-CAPs!
__ HERE ON THIS FORUM THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY POSTINGS WHICH ARE QUITE TOO DIFFICULT TO READ FOR THE 2 to 5% OF READERS WHO ACTUALLY PREFER (but hesitant to admit it), TO READ CAPS. _ SO MY POSTINGS ARE MAINLY INTENDED ESPECIALLY FOR THEM! _ AND OF COURSE ALSO FOR THOSE WHO ARE AT LEAST CAPABLE OF READING IN CAPs.
OTHERS, WHO ARE CONSIDERABLY MORE NARROW-MINDED, CAN STILL FIND PLENTY OF OTHER POSTS (in non-CAPs) TO READ!
____ I'VE NEVER BEEN VERY GOOD AT READING non-CAPs, AND NOW AT MY ADVANCED AGE, THEY'RE EVEN MORE DIFFICULT!
I'M ALSO UNABLE TO TYPE VERY WELL AT ALL, AND, SO AS TO BE ABLE TO (relatively quickly) READ WHAT I'M TYPING, I NEED TO TYPE CAPs!
SORRY, (a little for that), I GUESS.
__ NOW YOU, (the individual reader), CAN DECIDE FOR YOURSELF (and make your own conclusion), AS TO WHETHER OR NOT IT IS I, (Good-PC.Guy!), WHO HAS THE (worst) MENTAL-PROBLEM.

____ FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO FIND ANY OF THE POSTINGS TO BE DIFFICULT AT ALL TO SEE & READ, I SUGGEST THAT YA TRY HIGH-LIGHTING THE PRINT, AS I, (for one), HAVE FOUND THAT DOING SO, REALLY HELPS A GREAT DEAL!
PLEASE GIVE THAT A TRY.
UNTIL THESE FORUMS ARE FIXED TO MAINTAIN THE EXACT SAME SPACING WHICH WE HAVE ORIGINALLY TYPED-IN, I KNOW OF NO OTHER WAY TO MAKE THEM EASIER TO READ (directly).

Netiquette @ Good-PC.Guy! Round 2

by DefineReality - 8/28/09 6:03 PM In reply to: _'netiquitte' vs. The Needs of the FEW... by Good-PC.Guy!

Some points of clarification concerning your assumptions about me:
1) I am Canadian.
2) I am perfectly bilingual (English and French).
3) I am of the advanced age of 55 years.

Some points of clarification concerning your assumptions about forum readers in general:
1) I am going to assume you made up the 2 - 5% out of thin air (how presumptuous of ME!). I am sure there are some people that like all caps all the time, but as for what the percentage is, I'm pretty sure nobody has done an actual scientific poll.
2) Every forum I have been on or read has the same all caps rule. Many people complain when someone violates the rule. YOU are in the minority and wish to speak to the majority. If you want others to respect YOU and take YOU seriously, it is YOU that must conform to the netiquette. Notice my judicious use of caps in this post: the all caps words can easily be interpreted as having extra emphasis.

Some suggestions for you:
1) Use a program such as MS Word where you can compose your posts in all caps, then change it to lower case with caps for words at the beginning of sentences only. You can then copy & paste it into your posts here.

2) I repeat from my first post on this side topic:
STOP BEING SELFISH!

3) Have a nice day!

for 'definereality' only...

by Good-PC.Guy! - 8/28/09 7:41 PM In reply to: Netiquette @ Good-PC.Guy! Round 2 by DefineReality

dear side-poster,, first af all, i made absolutely no such definate "assumptions" about you!
sorry that my wording somehow allowed you to assume a way to have done that!

1) - yes, i guestimated on the percentage, based on just my own experience.
it would be interesting to know what you would find if you offered your peers in general, two separately typed paragraphs,, one done in CAPs and the other in non-caps, and see which they prefer to take to read!
i'd bet you that well over one in twenty would take the one done in caps.
(with my own peers, at least 4 out of 5 take the one in caps!)

2) - i was not aware that this forum has such an anti-CAPs rule. wonder where you read that?
i admit to being in the minority! but i specifically pointed-out that i do not care to address the majority!! just mainly my minority.
the only others who i actually care to earn respect from are those others who are within my same minority.
those other others who allow themselves to be so easily brainwashed by rules which were originally only brought into being, for just a small part of the net, ('chatting'),, i'm afraid i can't give much respect to. SORRY!

i thank you for the tip on how to possibly convert all CAPs to non-CAPs.
i may check into it to see if such would really work just as you've claimed.
(as this posting is taking me 4to5 times longer to finish.)

i confirm as i indicated previously... my intent has been to NOT be "selfish"!!
if i actually were so as you think, i'd not bother to post any of my advice at all!

have a nice night.

Netiquette @ Good-PC.Guy! You're OK, Final communiqué

by DefineReality - 8/28/09 9:08 PM In reply to: for 'definereality' only... by Good-PC.Guy!

This will be my final post on this side topic. I don't want to be rude or to offend you. You obviously have some computer knowledge and some good tips to offer.

My point is that this is a PUBLIC forum. You (nobody) can decide who is going to be able to read or respond to your posts; and as I said, you have some good information to pass along.

Even the people who find your ALL CAPS, ALL THE TIME penchant annoying or, as in my case, that it gives them a headache; want to read what your opinion or advice is. You can't say "...but i specifically pointed-out that i do not care to address the majority!! just mainly my minority." because we do want to see what you have to say!

You are right about one thing though: there is nothing in the CNET forum rules about ALL CAPS. But it is the netiquette (a contraction of the words NET as in internet, and etiquette as in accepted way of behaviour (Canadian spelling)amongst a group of peers), that ALL CAPS, ALL THE TIME, is rude. This applies equally to all NET discussions, not just IMs.

Anyway, I don't want to discuss it anymore.

Have a nice day! :)

There are short custs to formating

by evas53 - 8/21/09 8:49 PM In reply to: Reasons behind reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows OS? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

To me I use it to save time, to get ride of virus and other problems, the best way is to format the system, so I plan to do it and this is by setting up a C drive only for software and a D: drive for every thing else. After I install all the software I make an image of the C: drive and then if there is a problem the C: can be formatted and everything reinstalled from the image. Every large company I worked for did it that way but in there case the data was on the network. This saves a lot of time trouble shooting and reinstalling all the software. What is sad is you have to use the reinstall disk from Dell or others all the temporary programs has to be removed.

Reformatting

by roadrunner2525 - 8/22/09 12:25 AM In reply to: There are short custs to formating by evas53

From Win 2.0 on, I have probably averaged a reformat every month or so until 3 yrs ago. No, I did not disconnect from the Internet, nor did I enter a monastery. What I did was to attack the problem at its root, the Registry. I use three programs for active intervention and three for protection, along with Firefox and the NoScript and AdBlocker Plus plug ins.

Active intervention -

#1. URSoft Software's Your Uninstaller for uninstalling programs (not Add/Remove programs in CP) completely

#2. Macecraft's JV16 Powertools for cleaning the Registry

#3. A good (non Mcafee, Symantec or CA) standalone antivirus

Passive defence -

#1. A hardware router (incoming) AND a software firewall (outgoing)

#2. SuperAdBlocker's SuperAntiSpyware Pro for scanning

#3. Spybot Search & Destroy for the immunization, more than the scanning

Even though anti-malware software suites are easier and more convenient, I still believe in standalone programs. I have more choice with that concept.

Since I started using this system, I have reformatted four times. Once because of my ISP's "tech support," once because of Dell's and twice because I ran out of options.

FORMAT and INSTALL

by truckgk - 8/21/09 10:43 PM In reply to: Reasons behind reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows OS? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

All the apps. you employ to keep your system clean, cannot take the place of hands on maintainence(sic?). Separate drive for all downloaded apps. backup of unique files, clean copy of XP on separate IDE makes for simple brand new (OH LOOK IT's FAST AGAIN). My last reload was 3/28/08 I think it's about time. Takes about 3-4 hours. Consider it time well spent. Of course I don't have any malware or virus problems to deal with. Just my thoughts at this late hour.
