Should I buy a new computer now or wait for Windows 7?

by wlpncp - 8/14/09 3:58 PM

My old Compaq with Windows XP has served me well, but it is not capable of running Windows 7. Should I go ahead and get a new desktop now or wait for models with Windows 7 preinstalled? Will those with Windows 7 cost more that current ones with upgradable Vista? Thanks

My unpopular answer.

Always wait. We've been through this before with each and every major Windows release. There has been no change that I can see that tells me that your new machine will painlessly upgrade to Windows 7. In fact I bet those that do get it now will find their printer+scanner to work fine and when they upgrade to 7 the same story will be told.

Wait if you can. The printer scanner stories are a sure bet along with the few machines that don't survive the move to Windows 7. And I can guarantee there will be makers that will try to soothe us with words that it will be all worked out.

Waiting is so Wrong --- Buy Computer now - install Win7

by USA_IT_Consultant - 9/9/09 2:47 PM In reply to: My unpopular answer. by R. Proffitt Moderator

It is the most tested RC ever.
I trust my Windows 7 RC1 more than I trust my XP Professional.
My RC1 is much more productive than my XP.
I need to learn Windows 7 now - you will see why people should skip Vista and why they will embrase Windows 7
Windows 7 is So Much more efficient!!!

But, if you buy a computer now - be ready for future programs:
Only choose a computer with DDR3 Memory - 6 GB minimum
I suggest an ATI Radon HD series with at least 1G of RAM

A couple of months ago, Costco had a HP Intel i-7 processor, with the ATI Radion HD, 6 GB DDR3, SATA Hard Drive (high speed) and a great quality 22" monitor, all with the 2 year HP extended warranty for under $1,000.00.

Loading Windows 7 RC1 was so easy and the results were more exciting and useful than SmamWow.

You can spend $800 on a much less powerful dual processor wiht DDR2. They have a bottleneck at the motherboard, memory chip that will translate to to disappointments later as new Windows 7 software arrives. Those lesser technologies will be dumped after Christmas.

I can hardly wait ...

by Kees Bakker Moderator - 9/9/09 2:58 PM In reply to: Waiting is so Wrong --- Buy Computer now - install Win7 by USA_IT_Consultant

till my machine (with XP) breaks down sufficiently to warrant buying a new one. But as it's only 2½ years old, I'm afraid that will last until Windows 8 (or even Windows 9) arrives.
Unless, of course, my Windows 98 machine breaks down earlier. But I use that so little that I don't expect that either.

My last hope: my machine at work. But that's a brand new XP-machine and I didn't yet hear of any migration plans.

Going to be unpopular. Especially with those with hardware to move out.

Skip all the reinstall nightmares. Get it with the OS up and running. We've been here before and in this forum you still see the driver glitches, the lost data and the same stories.

If you didn't learn from the last five Windows version roll outs then there is little to do but wait and learn the lesson again.

I'm sure there will be newer models with Windows 7 pre-installed that will cost more than older models with Vista, and I'm sure other places will put some models with Windows 7 pre-installed on sale. It all depends on what the retailers decide to do.

you can buy one now if you want and still get Win7

by jonquilmcd - 8/21/09 6:55 PM In reply to: Should I buy a new computer now or wait for Windows 7? by wlpncp

Right now a lot of computer manufacturers are offering free Windows 7 upgrades with the purchase of a new PC. This means you don't have to wait until Windows 7 comes out to purchase a new PC - you can purchase one now and be guaranteed a shipment of a Windows 7 upgrade when it gets released. Just make sure before you make your purchase that there is a Windows 7 free upgrade guarantee on it. :)

...or buy one with Windows 7 RC already installed now

by BabyPC - 8/21/09 7:46 PM In reply to: you can buy one now if you want and still get Win7 by jonquilmcd

I know this only applies to those who want to buy a small and portable netbook computer, but did you know that there is one manufacturer (iiView) who ships their new A2 Slim Netbook with Windows 7 RC pre-installed already. They also give you a full Vista Home Premium license which qualifies you for a free upgrade to the final release of Windows 7 when it comes out on 22 October 2009.

I've done a Hands On Review Video of the iiView A2 with Windows 7 at my website, if you want to check it out:

Win 7

by pkennedy - 8/21/09 7:15 PM In reply to: Should I buy a new computer now or wait for Windows 7? by wlpncp

I am in the same situation with my main PC on my home netw*rk... it's a 7 yr old Gateway with Win XP... I'm trying and hoping to make it last until Win 7 comes out... I have one Dell laptop with Vista... all I'll say is.. Vista is still a nightmare... and I'll leave it at that... my three other PC's are XP-- one older Dell Desktop and two other laptops

I was told by a friend who w*rks with computers and is very computer savvy.. never do an upgrade to an operating system.. always do a complete install/reinstall from scratch.. there are always problems with upgrades... so with that advice I will wait

Wait

by billfranke - 8/21/09 7:17 PM In reply to: Should I buy a new computer now or wait for Windows 7? by wlpncp

Unless your current computer is failing to meet your needs right now, I would wait. In fact, that is just what I'm doing. I need a new laptop, but my old one still works, so I'm waiting until late October to buy one with Win 7 already installed. My son's laptop died last week, so I had to buy him a new one with Vista installed. Sure, he'll get the upgrade to Win 7 for free, but then someone has to install it. The only good thing that I can see about that is that he will have to do it himself: his system is Chinese, which makes it easier for him than for me to install. He's only 13, so it'll be a good learning experience for him. I have no desire to upgrade Vista to Win 7 in English or Chinese, nor do I want to bother with another clean install of Win 7: installing the OS takes time that can be better spent doing something really productive like eating, sleeping, or reading.

When the Win 7 computers are finally on the market, who knows what retailers will do to entice customers to buy. They may have short-term special sales because of the poor economy worldwide. Or some OEMs may surprise us with upgraded models or bonuses to make their machines more attractive. I'm hoping that the latter is true, and that, for example, a couple of the OEMs decide to upgrade current models to DDR3 RAM and faster FSBs and CPUs. I'm willing to pay more for better performance.

From everything I've read, I'm convinced that a clean install of Win 7 is better than upgrading. Clean installs require reinstalls of all your apps, another waste of time.

Unless you absolutely need a new computer right now, I recommend that you wait until you can buy a new one with Win 7 already installed.

I would suggest waiting for Windows 7 SP1 or 6 months which ever comes second. ;)

That way you will have a better chance of running with no trouble. :)

I tend to look for very good deals and expect to see them as stores cycle out the current display and just obsoleted models for new Win7 display models. I've saved as much as 2/3rds going this route and in talking to one store, they're going to offer the upgrade to Win7 when they sell out the Vista display models and then remaining stock of Vista units. It may limit the pickings as having the options you may want as the downside.

It may run on yours .

I am running Win7 on a five year old Celeron with 512Mb's,and it's definitely running better than XP.At the time of purchase I was not very computer knowledgeable and the Dell computer was virtually obsolete then due to the motherboard only supporting PCI graphics. So next year going to upgrade, by the time you purchase just the Win7 you may as well buy a new computer. And wlpncp have you tried running a trial of Win7 on your present machine,it's easy to partition your drive, plenty of freeware to do this, and it only took 25 minutes to install on my machine?

Thank you for your suggestions. I don't think my current system won't run the Windows 7, according to the Microsoft evaluation of my system. I think it is time for me to get a totally new system. That said, I think it may be best for me to just wait until I can get a new computer with Windows 7, instead of buying one with Vista now and having to upgrade to Windows 7 later. Make sense?
