Samsung: samsung 2009 plasmas loud buzzing

Not altitude

by ctboater - 7/23/09 6:19 AM In reply to: Altitude not the problem by junkan_68

I agree, that altitude is not what is causing the buzzing problem. There are far too many cases of people at sea level with buzzing sets (avforums, avsforum, sales sites, etc). On the plus side, it seems that there are also more positive reviews/experiences popping up online, but this buzzing issue wont go away.

Not altitude

by Ctyaty - 7/23/09 7:08 AM In reply to: Not altitude by ctboater

IF there are at least two sources of the buzzing--mechanical vibration and an electrical source--it could be, with respect to the electrical source, that the plasma cells are being pressurized incorrectly during the manufacturing process so that they'll buzz at any altitude. We all know that altitude can cause buzzing in a plasma, so maybe they should look for anything that might cause the television to "think" it's operating at a higher elevation than it really is. I'm just trying to reason my way through this, since it's so baffling.

Design flaw

by cellanime - 8/20/09 12:48 PM In reply to: Not altitude by ctboater

I think the reason why this beautiful sets have louder than normal buzzing is because of a design flaw, how many plasmas this thin have you seen lately? People say all plasmas buzz and it is true but not only plasmas, ALL tvs buzz, I guess samsung shouldve taken that into account when designing the set. I dont know how a plasma tv is put together but im thinking maybe a larger enclosure would help disipate the buzz. Sales reps allways talk about that NEW antiglare coating or filter or whatever on the b850 maybe it should be thicker or sound insulating or something. Put your ear against the back of any tv and youll hear buzz, put it against the screen and youll never hear it.

Not Altitude

by Ctyaty - 7/23/09 6:50 AM In reply to: Altitude not the problem by junkan_68

Saying that it's definitely not altitude assumes that all of the buzzing is caused by the same thing. That may or may not be the case. If the buzzing is a mechanical vibration, then dampening the vibrating component with rubber blocks will fix it. I'm virtually certain that my buzzing is electrical, not mechanical. On those other forums, there are plenty of people who have tried the dampening fix to no avail. I think this is one of the things that is making it difficult for Samsung, i.e., trying to determine how many sources exist for the buzzing. They can't arrive at a definite fix until they are able to identify all sources of the buzzing.

Next Step

I spoke with AT&T ConnecTech this morning and they are going to replace the Y main board. I guess this would not have been replaced in the previous television when they replaced the panel. Apparently, this is what they're now recommending as the fix for this type of buzzing. Keeping my fingers crossed.

good luck! im very curious to hear how this goes. Other uses reported having similar repair work done but still the buzzing came back, but who knows if they replaced it with a bad Y-board or something haha.

if that works that would make alot of people very happy im sure :) How long until you get the new set?

Buzzing

by cfs8642 - 11/10/09 6:23 AM In reply to: Elevation by Ctyaty

Not sure if this is relevant or not but many years ago I worked for GE as an engineer in their portable TV plant in Portsmouth, VA. We had a 10" portable color TV that would catch on fire after people would turn it off and go to bed. A few hours later they would wake up with the TV on fire. We brought these TV's back to the plant and could not duplicate the problem. We then realized it only happened in high elevation areas of the country. We finally were then able to duplicate the problem and found that the on & off switch would generate a spark when it was turned on & off. The lubricant was suppose to be fireproof in the switch & the switch was produced in Japan. Guess what, it wasn't. Once we solved that problem, everything was then OK. The reason I mention this is because in certain situations elevation does matter. Don't know if it does in this case but worth researching. This problem almost drove us crazy just trying to figure out what was going on.

The Latest for Me

by Ctyaty - 8/2/09 10:58 AM In reply to: Will Keep You Posted by Ctyaty

Since the Y main board is part of the panel, Samsung has decided to replace the entire panel. As you may recall, this is the second panel replacement I will have had. They replaced the panel on the first B560 I had and that did not work. Then they replaced the entire television and the new one buzzes worse than the old one. Now they want to do another panel replacement. The "new" panel was delivered to my house on Friday and this morning I looked at the rear of the new panel and saw that it had a manufacture date of January, 2009. The panel in my first B560 had a mfr. date of February, 2009 and the replacement panel for my first unit had a mfr. date of March, 2009 so, just based on mfr. dates, we're going backwards. Upon further inspection, I can see scrapes and scratches and tool marks on this replacement panel. From the mfr. date and the tool marks and scratches, it's obvious that this is a refurbished panel. Needless to say, I will be calling Samsung tomorrow and telling them that they are not going to replace a brand new television with what is, essentially, a used television. Almost every component on these plasmas is part of the panel, except the power supply and the input board. We'll see where we go from here.

Buzz with Samsung plasma 58B850

by TubbyPoutine - 8/10/09 10:30 PM In reply to: The Latest for Me by Ctyaty

-This is my first post about the buzz and yes I have it too with my 58B850.
-This mp3 is the same sound I hear, like an electrostatic buzz/hum like a florescent bulb (www.bpxdigital.com/mp3/buzz.mp3)
-It sounds the same when I put my ear next to the back of the tv or when I'm 15 feet away from the TV directly in front of it with my head at the same height as the middle of the TV (loudest point).
-The loudness faints and increases depending on where i sit in the room.
-The sound occurs even when nothing is plugged into the TV except for the the power cord and no other home theatre components are on but the TV.
-Brightness settings can vary it a little, but only in pitch it seems. The volume of the sound can't be reduced by more than 10% by making and changes to brightness settings or changing inputs.
-The buzz remains when I swivel the TV to face the open part of the room or to a corner.
-I am at 200m above sea level.
-I've had my TV for 2 weeks and put approx 60 hours on it.
-The buzz remains whether connected directly to wall outlet or through a high end power bar with line conditioning.
-I had 2 techs come look at it in one visit. One of them could hear it and the other claimed he couldn't. They didn't know how to fix it and never heard of the problem before. They suggested getting it replaced but I fear that will result in another TV with the same problem or worse yet - a refurb (which is what everyone else seems to experience when they get a replacement).

I can certainly drown out the buzz by turning up my volume higher than my normal listening level, however, when there are quiet scenes in movies/tv shows it get really annoying. When I am listening to softer music through the TV's music library, it gets really annoying. When I have it on for display purposes without audio, it gets really annoying.
The most frustrating issue for me is that I have really high end home theatre audio equipment. I paid a pretty penny to get near zero distortion with this audio equipment when listening to CD's and Blu-Rays. This buzz makes it sound like I'm running this audio through a clock radio on max volume. Very depressing.

Someone .. Samsung .. God ... Please please please help solve this problem that now has thousands of complaint posts in this cnet forum, the avsforum.com, and avforums.com.

This TV is horrible.

by djdeceit - 9/29/09 4:45 AM In reply to: Buzz with Samsung plasma 58B850 by TubbyPoutine

I now officially hate Samsung with a passion. Being in IT and having significate clout in my company when it comes to IT purchasing recommendations, you will never see a samsung purchase from me or anyone I have influence over again.

It all started with the new Series 6 PS58A650 I purchased in January 2009, which turned up on my door step DEAD.

Replaced shortly by a new PS58A650 that started acting up 6 months down the track, randomly switching it self on/off during viewing. Sometimes the TV wouldnt turn on for days, only to switch itself back on when no one was home.

I manage to get an upgrade to the PS58B850 for all my troubles and wasting time waiting for repair men to turn up to fix a tv that was less than 6 months old, and now this.

The buzzing is driving me insane. Its like metal crickets buzzing constantly in my head.

I sit 4 meters away from my TV and it's the same sound if I have my ear pressed against the screen or sitting back watching TV with audio louder than conversation level.

Granted the picture quality is superb and the features great, but did you miss the other 50% of the 'bigger picture' when it comes to building a TV? SOUND!!!

Pull your finger out Samsung, its obvious you have dropped the ball BIG time.

I am in Australia, so add us to your demographic! I can attest to everything in this post.

Absolutely disgraceful.

I know why the buzzing is occuring!

by n8vyc - 9/14/09 8:13 PM In reply to: samsung 2009 plasmas loud buzzing by blurayx

This is a simple case of speaker isolation from the high voltage being generated by the white being displayed on the screen.

The speakers from the TV are not properly isolated and are allowing the high voltage hum to leak through the speaker path.

It does not matter if the audio is muted or not you will still hear the hum or buzz when there is white letters or bright pictures on the screen.

ALL manufactures need to do a better job of isolating there speakers from the high voltage produced by the screen.

This was an issue with cheap TV's during the 70's. Come on people!

Is there any one who remembers this issue back then?!

You can make them thin but you can't fix speaker buzz.

By the way I have the Samsung 860, my first big screen TV.

I love it, but my 13 inch black and white TV did not buzz when I lived on campus.

There coming to fix my TV this week, if they deem it to be to loud!

Ha, i am the only one who will make that decision!

You're completely wrong.

by junkan_68 - 9/15/09 9:11 AM In reply to: I know why the buzzing is occuring! by n8vyc

It's not the speakers that emitts the sound!
If it is on your TV you probably have a different problem.

one week in and BUZZING

by hoest_abe800234 - 9/17/09 7:04 PM In reply to: You're completely wrong. by junkan_68

well like most of you no this forum thread I am disapointed. The picture is awesome the features are fantastic.. If only I were deaf. The buzzing is anoying to the point my dogs leave the room. I have made arrangements to return this unit and go with the Pannny. such a shame. I also sent a lette to the consumer protection agency for my state to have them look into this TV. I can not beleive Samsung cant hear this. If they would fix it they may start selling more sets but with this being all over the net I cant beleive the negative reviews could be good. For those of you who say you cant hear this . place your head in the center of the TV with your eyes level with the logo Then turn to the left and then to the right. It doesnt matter how far away you are I am 17-18 ft and still can hear it. We just spent 10k on creating a home theater room only to have it sound like it has neon lights installed. If something seem to good it usually is. will follow up with my next TV purchase to let you know if the Panny or the Sooony does better. Made in JULY 2009 and have a direct ciruit to the panel with only this tv on it.

Buzzing 860

by cjbfla - 9/25/09 11:41 AM In reply to: one week in and BUZZING by hoest_abe800234

Just got mine last Sunday and is buzzing enough that I bothers me. It bothers me most when playing games on PS3 because I usually stand about 5 feet away from the TV. Is not noticeable when watching TV with audio on but my couch is about 12 feet away. If I mute the audio I can hear it even seating on my couch. I am seriously thinking on retuning it to BB and getting the Panasonic Viera V10 but of course, they are out of stock on all BB in my area. I still have one more week on under the 14 days BB return policy (playing it safe). Ill wait till next Sat if the V10 are not in stock by then ill get something else as long as is not a Samsung. But before I do I will call suport and let them know that I am returning the set due to the buzzing defect. The need to fix the problem or stop selling the set.
