Hey,
So I found threads similar to this, but they werre all before the systems came out. I have about $300 saved for a new system, so I am definitely getting a new system. PS3 is out of my range and I can't justify it, but I'm trying to decide betweent he wii and the 360. I would say that i'm a little more than a casual gamer, but not too amazingly hardcore. I really get into games (like the kingdom hearts series on playstation) and try to play whenever I have the time. I like the wii gameplay, but can't help to wonder if this will be outdated soon (especially with project natal). I mostly like FPS though, so I don't know if that means I should get 360 or what. I do like online play, but is one better than the other?
Please give me guidance.
Thanks.
As always, the console you should get depends on the kinds of games you like to play. Don't even concern yourself with whether or not Microsoft and Sony are looking to copy the Wii's gameplay style. Of course they both are! Nintendo quite simply out thought them with the Wii. Sony and Microsoft just made a console that was more of the same, while Nintendo returned to its roots as an innovator.
Don't concern yourself with any of that crap, what matters is the GAMES. Which console has more of the type of games that YOU want to play? Don't concern yourself with what OTHER people want to play, because other people aren't paying for it, are they?
That being said, if you're mostly into FPS games, you'd be happier with a gaming PC than a console. FPS do NOT lend themselves well to the controls of a console system, and they can be quite frustrating. The Metroid Prime series on the GameCube being about the only exception I can think of. And the PC world is absolutely littered with FPS games that lack virtually any creativity whatsoever. Just run down some cramped hallways, shoot lots of baddies, pick up ammo and health as you go, the end. Same basic formula that's been in use since at LEAST Wolfenstein 3D.
I will say that the 360 has a couple decent FPS games, though I was less than impressed with Halo 3. Story sucked, it was way too short, they did the same horrible editing job with the script as they did the first two games, so you never really have much of a clue what's going on, and the graphics are really just higher resolution, they didn't actually do anything to help fix the stiff character movements in cut scenes and what not.
Gears of War 1 and 2 were surprisingly good, but they're more squad based tactical games than FPS. And I have to admit I was rather impressed with BioShock. But they at least made SOME attempts at being innovative. You could wander off and explore areas, the whole plasmid thing was at least moderately more interesting than just shooting things. I just wish game producers would spend less time on how things look, and more time on making them playable. Spend some time on the physics, so that characters move naturally. Get some of those clowns over at Havok (some of whom I've met) to put out a decent physics engine for a change.
Anyway... Moral of the story... Focus on the GAMES. Don't worry about anything else, because without GAMES that YOU want to play, a console is just an expensive bit of electronics collecting dust.
Go for the Xbox 360 or the PS3 if you are more than just a casual gamer.
Xbox 360 would be my choice for you..because it has the greater library of games for casual & hardcore gamers..& everything in between.
The PS3 is a much better system to me & the most powerful of the consoles...yet the 360 ..to me has better graphics & game play.
I have both & am happy with them.
I contemplated buying the Wii..but still have not..yes they have the Wii remote..but that hardly makes up for not having a large or versatile game library.
both the Xbox 360 & the PS3 have great online capabilities though PS3 has a plus of "free" online play vs. Xbox 360..you have to pay $50 per year for online play..or more if you pay each month.
PS3 also has a browser which allows you tho surf the web using your PS3 & your television.
I have more comparisons for you if you need them..but I thought I was only going to write a paragraph & ...
Now that a few days have passed and PS3 entry model is $299 with the Slim model coming as well, will you consider it? I can make a few game suggestions on it as well, and it is of course also a Blu Ray player, and if you lack one right now, HD movies are just really awesome. But as for the post as it is, if you are a long time more serious gamer, it's easier to recommend the 360 as it has much more consistent quality in it's month to month software releases, at retail and over the Xbox Live marketplace.
The Wii has a few stand out games, but for the most part is a dumping ground for junk mini game collections, childrens games, young girls games, and last gen ports. It's really tough to find the diamonds in the rough on that one. Not to mention the very low horsepower makes it hard to play on modernm HDTVs, as it lacks Hi def support and looks pretty terrible on them as a result, forcing me to play it in 4:3 ratio to make it look even half decent on screen.
i hate it when people say that the ps3 or xbox 360 is better than the wii. the controls don't matter and neither do the graphics. the systems are made to have fun not to go around saying that one system has better graphics than the other.
i would say you should get a 360 good range of games and support
now that ps3 is dropping its prices i would go for one of them, because the games look better. don't get a wii what ever you do, if you really want to get a wii get a ps3 or 360 first.
There may be reason to hold out... PS3 is dropping to $299 very soon!
