basically don't bother

by SeanHaynes - 8/17/09 10:29 PM In reply to: same problem by DimitrisKS13

the reason for this thread being soooooo long is that the DLNA, and in particualar the Samsung version of DLNA is a best hit and miss.
I won't repeat what I've already said (read my previous posts in this thread ) in essence the software is buggy and requires a mirad of 'work arounds' to get it to work in any fashion. Then there is the hardware/ firmware element from the NIC (network interface) to firmware that controls it - it's broken and not able to stream properly for any length of time, particularly if trying to watch a hi-def content. I put a packet sniffer on my network while streaming to the TV, my results would indicate that the 'buffers' on the TV actually can't handle anything above a bog standard avi or xvid causing it to fall over - I've actually had my TV just turn itself off!! I think it is a 'failsafe', when all else fails, reset.........

The software, the TV firmaware and hardware are crap; though I am pleased with the quality of the picture when used as a bog standard TV.

Point is this you would be far better off buying a standard hi def TV and a seperate media tank like the Popcorn which by the way is not d to the DLNA standard and will play every standard going from DIVX to MKV......The money you save on buying a normal hi def TV will more then pay for the media tank of your choice.

Only wish I had seen this thread before buying a Samsung.

It's working for me just fine but I'm using Twonky.

by staatsof - 8/18/09 4:43 AM In reply to: basically don't bother by SeanHaynes

I haven't tried any Blue Ray stuff. All my content is from DVDs. I alsp watch MPEG-4 video from Sanyo HI-DEF cam and that works the same from the USB port or via the DNLA. I can watch a 2 hr movie just fine but the navigation IS laughable.

I put in brand new Netgear router and two hubs hardwired with one hub right at the TV. I've had zero network issues and no drop offs. As mentioned by Twonky on their website and I think also on the DNLA website you need to keep the network environment straight forward.

Is it a great interface that lets you connect to any source and watch any type of content? No. It's working fine for the DVDs I've stored on my 1GB hardrive and I really love not having to deal with a DVD player. Scanning for content is clumsy but I also haven't invested a lot of time working with that on TWONKY and the Samsung. I think it may be not that fruitful an effort anyways.

I'm certain that at some point I'll probably put another local box of some kind next to my TV that will retrieve the files off my RAID drives and do a much better job of providing a user interface with reliable performance. Six months ago when I investigated that option extensively I did not find one I felt was worth investing my time in. It's still the bleeding edge out there. I weanted all my content to reside on the RAID drives on my PC so that everything is backed-up and controlled in a single location. So a local box with a big harddrive is not what I'll be looking for.

I would not bother with the Samsung server.

Bob S.

USB?

by DimitrisKS13 - 8/18/09 6:08 AM In reply to: basically don't bother by SeanHaynes

@Sean
While it is obvious that DLNA and the TV firmware have their problems, I never had any problems when using a USB stick as a final solution.
Also, DLNA, even wireless, has its problem but for the last 3 months that I'm having the tv set I had to reconfigure it only twice
So...DLNA flawless? No way. But this specific TV worth its money?I say yes. If you think of DLNA as something extra, then I'm pretty satisfied. I'm not using my TV for anything other than movies, tv shows etc so no complaints here

@staatof

What do you mean "Keeping your network straight forward"?

i have a working config i can share with you guys

by jedi2b - 8/18/09 6:38 AM In reply to: basically don't bother by SeanHaynes

okay, so reading this long post it seems that a lot of people is posting problems but few are posting solutions :)

so here we go. so far my experience with the TV and the setup i'm using is good with the following notable exceptions:
-the firmware on the my tv (LN52A850) doesn't support fast forward, or skipping so it won't work no matter what I do until Samsung fixes it. In that sense the TV DLNA support is worse than my old VHS recorder
-given that the TV only supports well a handful of formats and codecs you NEED a transcoding platform to really make any use of it. If you have an old PC like mine at home that means you have to transcode offline because it doesn'T have enough horsepower to do it in real-time. So worst case I have to wait a bit longer than i would like to watch content on my tv because i have to transcode offline. This won't be a problem if you have a decent PC (not like mine)

appart from that i'm very sattisfied with my solution:
-i can see all the photos i have (JPG format)
-i can listen to all my music (MP3 format)
-i can watch any videos (if previously transcoded to some of the formats that i will detail later)
-all my content is organised in folders that are easily accesible, divided by type of content and ordered alphabetically

so in this post lets start by the network setup. Again i will explain my setup, any other combination, use it at your own risk. So here we go:
-use only wired network connections, this is NOT a good use for wi-fi technology. I won't explain why because it would be too technical and boring. Take a look at wikipedia if in doubt.
-keep your TV and the PC that will be sharing content connected to the same network equipment, avoid daisy chaining equipment
-to avoid headaches, keep your tv and pc in the same ethernet segment (or vlan if your equipment supports it) don't put any routers or firewalls in between. Ideally find a cheap ethernet switch and use it to connect your tv and pc, then if you need afirewall or router add it to this switch in another port. Other setups will work but will require you to learn some networking basics and i'm sure you have cooler things to do with your spare time
-make sure the ports in your network switch are configured in autosensing mode. If your switch supports it, make sure you are not having any ethernet collisions on the ports connecting the tv and pc. If you are, play with the speed and duplex settings until you find one where you have no more collisions.

this is it for the network setup. in an upcoming post i will share my PC software setup

don't give up, it's possible!
Omar

i have a working config i can share with you guys - part 2

by jedi2b - 8/18/09 11:16 AM In reply to: basically don't bother by SeanHaynes

ok, here we go for part 2, in this case the media server PC.

i tried a bunch of servers including the pathetic samsung media server, twonky, and others. So far the best I was able to find was TVesrsity (by far) and of course, it's free :)

The only thing you really have to do to make it work with your samsung TV is to add a new profile for the Samsung TV as it's not supplied with the application. The way to do it is:
-install the last version of TVersity (you don't need the pro version unless you want internet content, which i don't)
-locate the profiles.xml file (normally installed on Program Files\TVersity\Media Server) and open it with notepad
-go to the end of the file and copy and paste the following just before the last line that says "</profileList>"

-open the TVersity console and go to the settings tab
-leave the mediadevice as autodetect
-click on restart sharing
-on the left select the "transcoder" menu
choose the following setting leave all the rest with default values
-when to transcode = only when needed
-video resolution = 1920 x 1080
-image resolution = 1920 x 1080
-optimization = speed
-connection speed = 100mbps wired
-compression = minimum
-on the left click on media library menu
choose the following setting leave all the rest with default values
-media library menus = file system
-on top choose the "library" settings
-on the left click on sources -> file system -> folders
on top click sur add media source and just add the path to your content folder on your PC
-on top click on "refresh media library" and you should be good to go. now you should have acces to your media from your tv, and in most cases if the format is not supported by your tv tversity will do the transcoding

on the next post i will talk about supported formats on your tv....

No more broken connections

by cDGo - 8/18/09 1:47 PM In reply to: basically don't bother by SeanHaynes

The posting from jedi2b looks like it will solve my problem.
It's a bit early to cheer yet, the (720) movie is running for 20 minutes now, but thats way longer than the samsung software ever did.

One thing is missing in the explenation (youre probably english speaking) is the subtiteling.
I seem not to be able to find how the subtitleing is working.
The subtitle is present and when played from an external HD it works perfect.
SO I will look into the forum of the makers to find out more.

and the point is...............

by SeanHaynes - 8/18/09 3:11 PM In reply to: basically don't bother by SeanHaynes

this, why do people think it is in any way the 'norm' to accept unpolished, unfinished, incomplete products like a TV you pay a premium for based on the promise of extra functionality like networking, DLNA etc. when in actual fact as this thread proves does not do what it says on the packet.......
Look at it this way, if you went into an Audi showroom and ordered a 'model' with air con, abs, etc etc and instead was delivered the same model, but the base version you'd be a little peeved and would no doubt be grabing the salesman by the short and curlies. well this is how I feel about Samsung.
It is NOT acceptable to advetise a product with lies. It doesn't work.
Is it acceptable to expect (under the guise of community help ) to expect the general public to resolve issues the dip **** designers couldn't.
Why, even when you consider how restrictive DLNA is, does Samsung make it worse by introducing a bizare mix of playable audio / video codecs.
As a Cisco qualified network engineer, I have to laugh at the very hit and miss issues surrounding connectivity, it really is appalling - there are a mirad of tools you could have used to make life easier like TOE, but I bet your engineers think that's what you pick when your not thinking of ways to **** customers off.
Point is this, it should do what it says on the box , out of the box ; though I admire the tenasity of some Samsung diehards, a USB stick dosn't win me over.

why?

by DimitrisKS13 - 8/18/09 12:48 PM In reply to: Samsung DNLA/Wiselink/Samsung PC Share Manager Setup by kstevens4

Thanks for all the info.
One question.
Why you say that Samsung PC Share Manager doesn't worth anything?
Not that it worth much but I basically am asking, is it due to poor features(that's true) or any connectivity problems, as disconnecting and such?

Why I dumped Samsung and TVersity servers

by staatsof - 8/18/09 1:08 PM In reply to: why? by DimitrisKS13

I tried the Samsung server out approx. 6 months ago. Everything had to reside on the C: drive if you were running XP. People were having so many issues at that time I investigated TVersity and then found Twonky worked as advertised. TVersity just kept giving invalid format errors and I tried for 3 days with all of the the then current suggested "work arounds". Big waste of time back then. By now maybe everything has changed. But Twonky has been flawless for me even if that combined with the Samsung interface is rather limited.

@Post 171 - It Does Matter How it Functions

by LPRDP1 - 8/18/09 4:02 PM In reply to: Why I dumped Samsung and TVersity servers by staatsof

I agree with Sean Haynes in Post 171. My LN52A750 has not worked at all after spending much time troubleshooting nearly 170 suggestions from this forum.

I did pay premium just for this functionality and his car analogy is appropriate: this is a high-priced piece of equipment and it should work as advertised.

In the last 2 months of ownership, I've tried Samsung PC Share, TVersity, Twonky, MediaPlayer11 -- and, frankly, I'm exhausted with all the settings, firmware, file types, codecs, drive limitations, and configurations, reboots, routers, etc.

Actually, I did get a hint of a function via the Wiselink (remote) interface using PC Share, but it proceeded to fail after making the first selection of a JPG folder.

This is all too fragile. And Samsung should do better.

I believe this discussion has run its course.

First raised in Dec 2008, it is now at 175 posts, and it seems to me, has moved way off-topic. It is now attracting post/retaliation-post, and so on.

Time for this to close now, so I have locked the thread.
