This issue started about 6 months after I purchased my iPod. I have just been dealing with it, but had sometime this evening, and would see if I could find some help with it.
It doesn't matter the source of the music I have (ie; iTunes, cds downloaded to iTunes, music from other sources) it pauses randomly with anything. It only happens when I am using the headphone jack. I thought it was the type of phones I was using, but still happens with the higher end ones I purchased. Although, when I use the iPod dock that I have, it works fine.
I have heard that this might be a software issue, and if so, has Apple come up with a fix for it?
and if so, why not ask Apple to fix this problem?

MrMacFixIt, do you really think that I would be posting here, if I hadn't already checked with Apple?
I have contacted Apple, with no success. I have also visited the "local" Apple store, and since the iPod was out of warranty at that time, the only option given to me was to replace the unit. The "local" Apple store, is over 150 miles away. Not really my idea of local. No, I don't live in the sticks either.
Before I spend the money on replacing my iPod, I want to exhaust all options available.
After posting my question, I checked out a few other tech sites, and some of them mentioned a software flaw. Apparently, the iPod is supposed to pause when the headphone is unplugged...and this would make sense, considering that the only time the unit randomly pauses, would be when the headphone jack is being used.
when you did not feel it necessary to mention it. A quick read through these forums will show you that people post here and never checked with Apple about a problem.
If it is any help to you, my iPod 4G Mini and my wife's Nano, both play with the headphone removed.
My "local" Apple store is 243 miles away and I do not live in the sticks either. But then again, as I have no idea where you live, how would I be expected to know how far it was to the local Apple store.
I really could not be expected to know that your iPod was out of warranty either.
Anyway, good luck with the solution

FWIW, I had a 2gen iPod Nano and my wife has a 1gen Nano. They both automatically pause when the headphones comes out. So my first thought is your iPod is having a phone jack or headphone problem. I don't know if there's anyway to fix the jack, might be easier to buy a new iPod. It might be worth buying some inexpensive ear buds and giving them a try to see if it's a headphone problem.
I did a quick web search (as I'm sure you did) and found that other people with later iPods are having a problem. So I doubt it's a function of old software, but I would suggest trying that. Have you upgraded to the latest iTunes? If not, do so. Also see if there is an upgrade to the iPod software. Plug your iPod into your computer and look at your iPod on iTunes.
As a last resort, you could try to restore the iPod to its original settings and then reload your music.
Have you tried the Apple forums? My experience is that you find others in the same predicament who can't fix whatever problem, and Apple doesn't provide any help, but you never know.
Good luck.
