Help in choosing the correct stereo reveiver

by jdblock469 - 8/6/09 8:10 AM

I have 6 pairs of speakers already installed in the ceiling throughout my new house that I need to run off my receiver. I will be getting a speaker selector to connect and run all speakers to the receiver. I also will be connecting a 5 disc multi CD player to this receiver and need it to be able to connect an ipod adapter/connector and also have AM/FM tuner. What size of receiver do I need? I had a 100 watt per channel sony receiver in a prior house and it burned up. It was also running 6 pair speakers... Sales rep said it needed to have more watts per channel. 200 watts per channel? How many watts per channel does a person need when running 6 pairs of speakers? Any recommendations on brand/model of receiver that would work best? About speaker selectors... I already own (2) 4 pair speaker selectors, but need to operate 6 pairs of speakers. Can I combine these 2 somehow to run the 6 pairs or do I need to buy new? As far as price. I'd like to spend as little as possible, but obviously want something with good quality that will work good without problems.

100 watts/ch does seem underpowered if you wanted to run 6 pairs of speakers running off of one receiver. Do you know the ohm rating for your speakers? 4, 6 or 8?

How much can you spend? Budget will definitely play a major factor. You might want to contact the customer support for say Denon/Marantz/Onkyo/etc. and ask them how much power they would recommend for your setup out of a 2-channel receiver. If you need to go up to 200 watts per channel, you might want to think about getting a separate 2 channel amp and buy some cheap stereo pre-pro. But alas, it all depends on your budget.

Stereo receiver

Instead of a speaker selector here is another option. Find a receiver (Denon, Onkyo, or Yamaha, etc) that has Zone2/Zone3 capabilities using Pre-out connections. Next find a couple of used power amps such as Adcom on Ebay. The receiver should have A/B selector which will power 2 pair of speakers and the power amps will control the others and none of the speakers will be under powered. The receivers are in the $300-$400 range retail around 80 to 100 watts per channel and have Ipod dock option. Adcom makes 2, 5, & 7 channel power amps and while you can find a good deal on a used one, they weigh a ton and shipping charges can add up. Niles audio also makes a multi-zone receiver, but I don't know whether they offer Ipod dock option.
