Poll: Will you upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released October 22?

by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator - 8/7/09 1:21 PM

October 22 is just around the corner. Will you upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released?

Yes. (Why are you so certain?)
No. (What're your reasons?)
Undecided yet. (Why the uncertainty?)
Maybe after the first big patch. (Is this what you normally do?)
I don't do Windows.

YES, My half-price Home Premium is already ordered

I skipped Vista, and I think it is time to upgrade.

No, I don't think so.

First, I'm OK with vista on my three PCs. Second, I just bought a Mac, and I use it 99percent of the time now. Third, I tried the 7 free trial, and all I could think to say about it was, "wow, people will actually pay to 'upgrade' to this?". I wasn't impressed. It looked and worked exactly like Vista, only I couldn't get some old stuff to work on 7 that did work on Vista. Fourth, like I said, I just bought a Mac, so, I don't have any extra money laying around to waste on a new MS fiasco.

Yes absolutely

I have been using it since public beta release, no on RC.
It has feature I want that are not available to me in Vista.
The Media Center in W7 has an EPG that works in Australia, which Vista does not. That alone is worth it for me as I do a lot of tv recording, the rest is a bonus.
I have a two and a half year old computer I built myself, everything worked from first install, all my programs work as does all hardware.
Most harware was found and drivers installed, I had to install my TinyTwin usb drivers from my driver cd, W7 found the Compro card and installed the driver, just as well this company makes good tuners but lousy software.
I needed to update the Silicon Image SATA pci card driver, but it did work.
So far I have not found any problems with W7.

windows 7?

by varick - 8/7/09 6:22 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released October 22? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

hell no I won't !! I'm quite contented with my XP thank you very much. wait awhile fools,...micro-idiots will come up with another excuse to spend money on...I have zero reason to buy anything!!!

Post 6 of 89

Nope!

by lfreel - 8/7/09 6:58 PM In reply to: windows 7? by varick

XP will suit me fine. Maybe it's MAC time if I need an upgrade. A printer and film scanner are not supported by Vista or Windows 7. This may not fix the driver issue but it will get me out of the Windows nightmare.

I agree, Nope, Never.. never again.

Although I will surely get hammered,
I bought a Sony VAIO Notebook with Vista Business on it. It is about 2 years old now and to this day, I have NEVER gotten it to work correctly. You might argue that some of this is hardware related but the fact remains that I could never reliably use the computer, which had a $2,300 Price Tag. I paid for what I thought was the best, and both Vista and Sony support was horrible. In fact, Sony realized how bad Vista was and very shortly after releasing my model, offered an "XP Downgrade" which they had the gall to charge money for.

For the first time ever, I paid top dollar and purchased an MacBook Pro, and have not looked back , except for a few PC-based programs I enjoyed.

I won't to the MAC-PC comparison, but I am very happy with the switch, and finally feel I got value in use as I now spend Much more time "computing" and less time troubleshooting.

SOOOOOOOO, the "long answer" is... HELL NO. I will not. Slowly I will be replacing all my PC based computers with Mac products, this from a person who has built 20 PC machines and purchased another 40 over time, for my businesses.

Wary but interested

I skipped going to Vista (kind of glad too). I built my system and need to do all the drive updates myself. I want to leave the 32 bit world and head into the 64 bit realm, so I want to see and hear a few of the related problems that may come with the conversion into a new OS system.

I will not upgrade to Windows 7.

by dcwornock - 8/7/09 6:45 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released October 22? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I tried Windows 7 for two months before returning to Windows XP, which is a far superior program to Windows 7 even if Windows 7 was supported. The pros and cons of Windows 7 are as follows:

Pros:
Windows 7 was easy to install and installed most of my drivers.
Windows 7 has a nice feature of auto arranging 2 documents side by side, each taking half the page.
That is it. There are no other advantages.

Cons:
Help files are almost non-existant. For example, if you search for System Restore you will not find it. You can find it by other methods but it very difficult to find.
Search for files and folders is extremely limited. In other words it sucks to high heaven. The search for files and folders with XP is 40 times better.
If you put internet exployer on your quick launch bar and open a web site, you cannot open another web site without going first to programs and then clicking on internet exployer, Clicking on the icon on the quick launch bar will not open multiple windows.
There is no outlook express. Instead you must download the near worthless "Windows Live Mail."
There are many changes; they are not improvements but require you to take a lot of time learning the different method.

"Help files are almost non-existant. For example, if you search for System Restore you will not find it. You can find it by other methods but it very difficult to find." - It is a pre-release test version, they build those in near the end when everything has properly bakes so they don't have to rewrite them later.

"If you put internet exployer on your quick launch bar and open a web site, you cannot open another web site without going first to programs and then clicking on internet exployer, Clicking on the icon on the quick launch bar will not open multiple windows." - Move to Firefox or Chrome, not that IE8 is bad, but it still has a bit of growing to do before it catches up.

"There is no outlook express. Instead you must download the near worthless 'Windows Live Mail.'" - Outlook Express was retired in Vista (changed to "Windows Mail") and 7 (to decrease bloat) removed the Mail app from the disc. "Windows Live Mail" is the successor to Outlook Express(for more info see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Live_Mail ). Alternatively you could move to Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/ ).

"There are many changes; they are not improvements but require you to take a lot of time learning the different method." - I sort of agree, but it was changed in Vista. In a few months we all will get used to it. (Why did they change Add/Remove Programs to Programs and Features?)

Disappointing to hear

by svanerp - 8/9/09 10:03 AM In reply to: I will not upgrade to Windows 7. by dcwornock

My 2005 laptop will not do basic video editing in WinMP or Roxio EMC. Has a really hard time importing an hour video in SD. Definitely will not burn a dvd from within those apps. Have to detach all peripherals, disconnect from internet to even try.

My ISP advises since I've avoided Vista this long, wait for W7, upgrade my processor, 64 bit, etc. I will certainly NEED those Help files to find my way around all that new stuff. I suppose there's always a "Dummies" companion book. I've only had laptops, desktop would be a better power value.

Did notice that Help on this laptop isn't nearly as easy to navigate finding "help" as previous HP hardware. Seems to be the direction OS are heading. Waiting for SP1 won't help the Help files issues. And I doubt HP will OEM an upgrade to Help on their machines shipping with W7.

This laptop is working fine for all but the fun stuff above and if I pay alert to resources issues i.e. using external hard drives, etc. intend to keep it on XP, but off the internet and probably a free antivirus product vs. Norton (which is getting heavier all the time).

System:
HP Pavillion notebook dv4000
Intel 1.73GHz M processor
1Gb RAM
100GB hard drive about 90% free
DVD/CD +/- RW
WinXP Home,
ZoneAlarm free firewall (Windows firewall off),
Norton Antivirus 2009
DSL connection

It nice how you come out with pro's and con's before

by orlbuckeye - 8/22/09 6:58 AM In reply to: I will not upgrade to Windows 7. by dcwornock

Windows 7 is released. Things like the helpare added later rather then earlier. One Pro you didn touch on is networking. The tools in Vista and Windows 7 are much better then XP. Windows mail or Outlook Express aren't part of the OS. Windows Live mail allows you to set up pop email accounts as well as web accounts such as yahoo and Outlook Express was only for pop accounts. Accessing you most popular applications faster and easier is also a big advantage of Windows 7. The biggest advantage is Windows 7 will be supported for years to come by both MS and the hardware vendors. As time goes on new devices such as printers, routers and others will stop working because of the lack of drivers.

Will I upgrade to Win7?

by ny2nv - 8/7/09 6:55 PM In reply to: Poll: Will you upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released October 22? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I already pre-ordered the Upgrade, it's a steal at $49.99.
Only wish I could do it today, even though I'm happy with Vista.
Haven't seen a BSOD since XP.
