May be a repeat - Vista Home Prem upgrade to Win7 Home Prem
by josephfuentes - 8/4/09 11:25 PMCan I upgrade my Vista Home Prem with NO Service Packs (none!) to Win 7 Home Prem or is Vista Home Prem with SP1 a prerequisite? Do I need to have SP1 installed first?

doesn't mention any other requirements for Vista, eg must be SP1, so I assume an upgrade for a Vista without any SP's would be OK. But don't hold me to that.
I have to ask though. Why no service packs on Vista? I'm up to SP2 on my Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

I haven't seen this question before, but worst case scenario is that you have to download it right before you upgrade.
Again, may I ask why you don't have any SPs?

Service pack upgrades because they usually include fixes. Vista is up to SP2. I asked the same question but used SP2 instead of 1. I would install at least SP1 on Vista since it's been out for a few years. I would do this regardless of my intentions to upgrade to Windows 7.
I upgraded my Vista to SP2 just to stay current.
I'm almost betting the SP1 may be required.

But that's a non-issue here. I haven't found any single problem first hand with SP1. Can't say that for everyone?

I am going to swap out my main drive from a 7200rpm to 10,000rpm. Rather than doing a ghosting and carrying with me all the baggage from my current install- my Vista is up to SP2 like everyone else - I want to do a fresh install on my 10K rpm disk and avoid copying over corrupt registries, hidden malware etc. I have the recovery CD from HP along with all necessary drivers. Therefore it would be so much easier for me to install original Vista and go straight to Win7 than to go through the heartbreaking and tedious process of going from 'virgin' to several updates then SP1 (remember all that?).
It's just a matter of shortening the migration. If there are any suggestions out there I am more than welcome to hear them!
Why don't you just install Windows 7 clean?

I had that happen when I installed the Beta. I did a clean install of Vista and Windows 7 wouldn't install still after SP1. A little note it took a punch of updates to get to the point that SP1 would install.

It found and installed the correct graphics card and basically the only thing i had to get the driver myself for was the realtek sound drivers.
