I had a look at the latest word processing software and decided that I didn't need it so tried to un install it.
I now get a windows software installation window every time I start my pc and when I start a program - word, excel, powerpoint, media player
Silverlight refuses to work on any browser, Opera, Firefox, IE.
My older versions of microsoft software do not work and I am unable to uninstall or repair them (even inserting the set up disks, which are refusing to auto run.
I have tried System Restore but this does not correct the problem.
I'm running Windows XP.
Any ideas, short of reformatting my drive?
regards
Which version?
Have you contacted them regarding the issue?
Deleting all those software folders from the Program Files folder?
Checked for malware on your machine?
Hope this helps and let us know more.

Some clarification, it was windows 2007, which I didn't realise has an automatic delete of all previous software.
I've manually deleted all the windows files but the when I try to install either manually or through add/remove, I get a 'setup already running' message.
I haven't been able to find the <Office Source Engine>, so assume that has been deleted.
I've also not been able to delete the temp IE files, which are listed in the instructions to delete from the %temp directory.
I thought I would try here before contacting Microsoft, although it is time I reformatted my HDD, not done it for a year or so.
regards
