No, I can't normally tell any difference

I have used a Registry Cleaner (actually, several different ones) for many years. But I can't honestly say it has made a difference to my computer, in the sense that the question implies. It doesn't make the computer run any faster!

I use a registry cleaner (e.g. Iolo's System Mechanic) to find invalid references, such as invalid shortcuts, invalid uninstaller links, invalid fonts, etc. Then I fix these errors manually.

I also use it to find and delete recent file lists (i.e. MRU lists: lists of the Most Recently Used documents, etc).

I also use a registry defrager (Free Registry Defrag, a.k.a. Registry Clean Expert from www.fulldownloads.org), which optimises the registry. The defrager, as opposed to a "cleaner", *does* actually make the system run faster. By removing empty space and deleted keys, and by defragmenting the registry structure, I get a smaller and fully optimised registry.

The only registry cleaner I've ever had serious trouble with is Microsoft's RegClean.exe, which I don't now use, as using it has crashed my computer in the past. It deleted registry keys that the system needed! I could tell a difference with Microsoft RegClean, right enough, when the system crashed and wouldn't boot up!

I'm in Love

If your one of those like some of us. You need to try WinUtilities. I love the search feature. I have about 7 registry cleaners on my computer that I refused to let go of because of this or that feature. But when I'm done with the un-install, and registry cleaners, etc.

I shoot straight over to WinUtilites and go straight to the registry search, put in my one or two words relating to the program. And let it run, after it's done. You right click and select, it takes you right to the key, I've cleaned up about 100 keys in less than two hours. Some programs were over a year ago, that none of the registry programs found, but WinUtilites found it.

After 4 different cleaners I found the one for me

I tried registry cleaner after cleaner, paying 35 to 40 dollars a shot. All with disasterous result. I would crash my Visa and have automatic resotre cycles 3 or 4 times, until finally having to run system restore to a previous date setup.

My solution was to uninsall each one after use. The ones on line that give a free scan and tell you that you have 90 errors in order to sell their product, I would not trust a minute.

One day, lo, I found my McAfee Security Center virus protection/firewall had Tools menue and a registry and clean up scan. I use it all the time. It is gentle and cleans up my registry, creates a restore point, and does the job whithout all the mad crashes and error messages that I now belive were caused by my previous reg cleaners. The McAfee Tool/reg cleaner and periodic defrag and clean up in Windows Left click on C: drive icon, all this had got me lots of norman operation. Reg Cleaners I bought on line were money makers for their makers, and in that way work for them.

CC Cleaners do work

by broncopeter - 10/23/09 3:41 PM In reply to: Poll: Registry cleaners --has it helped your PC's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My 5+ year old p/c is nearing the end of its work life. It's a Pentium 4cpu 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM NVidia G Force4 Ti 4200. I know my RAM is too little but it used to fire up much faster than it does now. Loading files can take ages. When I run ccleaner, wow, an instant improvement that only lasts for a short while then my p/c is sluggish again. Something must be running in the background that I can't find & is using up all my power. I am also using AVG Free edition. Any suggestions?
