BD-P1500 : DivX support?

by Bailoze - 1/20/09 7:59 AM

Hi,

it looks like DivX is supported on European models of the BD-P1500 player, but not in the northern american model. Why?
I purchased this player, thinking that DivX was supported by doing a firmware update! But I still can't play my DivX with firmware 2.3.
Knowing that, I would not have bought this player.
Can you give us a date when divx will be supported?

Thank you.

DivX

Bailoze,

There is no plan to incorporate DivX into the BD-P1500. It was never advertised as a DivX supported player in the U.S.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

DivX and BD-P1500

Ok, but why is it available on European models, and not on US models?
Is there any technical reason?

Bailoze,

I'm looking into that now.

Let me clarify and get a correct answer instead of guessing.

Please add DivX/.AVI support to North American firmware

by Alan-Toronto - 1/20/09 8:30 PM In reply to: DivX by Samsung_HD_Tech Samsung staff

It's true that Samsung did not advertise this, but as it is available within the company it would really be good if you shared it with us. This would make Samsung products more attractive, as it would show that Samsung continues to enhance their capabilities even after purchase.

We really need this. Many of us have DivX (.AVI) files that we want to play on our BD-P1500 players.

Please add DivX (.AVI) capability into an upcoming BD-P1500 firmware release for the Canadian/U.S. markets.

I see I am not alone in voicing this request. I find it strange that Samsung will do this for UK models and not do the same for US models. Not very good marketing and it could well influence future purchasing decisions.

DivX

by Samsung_HD_Tech Samsung staff - 1/31/09 6:25 AM In reply to: Divx by billbaio

I understand that there are a lot of strong opinions on this, and Divx provides an additional feature for some, but not all, users.

The BD-P1500 was never advertised with Divx in the U.S. Market. I can appreciate the fact that some users here want Divx, especially in light of "a different region has it" arguments I've seen here.

Different regions don't have some features that other regions don't, such as RSS feeds like USA Today (US) or Yahoo Entertainment (Canada), and some regions have no RSS feed at all. Different regions have different demands. I don't make those decisions, so it's difficult for me to answer "why".

If you want to return a unit based on the fact that it doesn't fit your needs, hey, I totally understand that. I'm about solutions, and even when it doesn't work in our best interest, I do want our customers to be happy. But let's not demand "fixes" and "resolutions" to features that the unit never claimed to have. This unit was not (or should not have been!) purchased upon the promise of having Divx capabilities.

I am happy to see what can be considered when it comes to this and make suggestions and hope for the best. But we weren't dishonest, nor out of compliance for what the unit was advertised as.

Is that an unfair statement to make?

Polite request to add AVI/DivX support

by Alan-Toronto - 1/31/09 8:52 AM In reply to: DivX by Samsung_HD_Tech Samsung staff

Nope, it's not an unfair statement at all. I can't speak for the others, but I am not "demanding" AVI/DivX support. I am not angry at Samsung for not providing this, and I agree that it was not advertised for North American sales.

I'm just humbly requesting that Samsung please consider adding this support to North American firmware. It would benefit many of us and enhance Samsung's reputation for continuing to improve its products. Given that this capability has already been added to European firmware, it seems that it would not be unreasonable to conclude that it would be possible to do so for North America. I hope Samsung will consider this.

Thanks very much for investigating this. I appreciate it. :)

Whoops....

by Samsung_HD_Tech Samsung staff - 2/1/09 5:22 PM In reply to: Polite request to add AVI/DivX support by Alan-Toronto

Yeah, I jumped the gun on that a little, and I humbly apologize if my post came across negatively - I was merely trying to show a different perspective. At the end of the day, I do want our customers to be happy more than anything.

I'm trying to get it considered, however the odds are that it's likely not going to happen. That said, I'm going to appeal to the decision-makers to see if we can get further support for this format.

I can understand the frustration of having a format that you really want, and the possibility of it not being supported. If it was my call, I'd make it happen, and I'm doing everything I can to support that.

All I can do is recommend. So I'm sending up both the demands and the humble requests. :) Maybe one or the other will appeal or make someone take notice.

Thanks for advocating on our behalf! Another DivX vote here.

by duncandwyer - 4/1/09 12:55 PM In reply to: Whoops.... by Samsung_HD_Tech Samsung staff

Thanks for advocating on behalf of the customers. I'm another one who would REALLY appreciate the added DivX support in a future firmware update.

Adding DivX would make your product hugely popular among technofile Blu-Ray player consumers. The fact that the P2500 supports NetFlix is an AMAZING feature that really tipped the scale in my mind and convinced me to buy the player. Adding DivX capability wouldn't only be great for this product, it would help convince me me to buy more Samsung products in the future.

Please consider the idea!

Vote for DIVX from somebody looking into buying a Samsung

by Surecure - 5/14/09 3:21 PM In reply to: Whoops.... by Samsung_HD_Tech Samsung staff

I certainly want to add my vote to getting Samsung to offer DIVX functionality to their Blu-Ray players, especially in light of the (in my view, ridiculous) fact that Samsung has already made this available to players in the UK.

My parents are looking at getting a Blu-Ray player very soon and -- since I'm the technophile of the family -- they will be turning to me for advice in purchasing. I have a bunch of DIVX movies I've already purchased Blu-Rays of and would love to give to them. If Samsung doesn't have DIVX on their players, needless to say they won't be getting money from our pockets. There are players available from other companies in the North American market that do feature DIVX compatibility. They'll certainly appreciate the business.

Unless the hardware in the North American players is somehow wildly different and can only have certain types of firmware updates -- we all know how laughable a suggestion that is -- there shouldn't be any major hurdle in Samsung North America (not to be confused and thus malign that completely separate entity Samsung UK) to do so except the will of Samsung North America's management. ;-)

still no Divx

Here here. Well stated. Rest assured I too will review compatibility with Divx for any future purchases of a Blu Ray player.

DivX should be a given

by dhuhtala - 7/25/09 4:16 PM In reply to: Whoops.... by Samsung_HD_Tech Samsung staff

When I was buying my TV (Samsung), I got the blu-ray play bundled for a great deal so I didn't really look at specs very closely - it was nearly 50% off so I can't complain about it now...however, I was floored when I found out it didn't support DIVX. Every recent DVD player I've purchased over the last year or two has support for it, so I didn't even think of checking - I assumed every blu-ray player would absolutely include it. I'm still amazed that it doesn't support DIVX...it's become a necessity for me.

I capture HD video from my PVR to my computer and then compress it (out of necessity) with DIVX Pro. All my videos are compressed using DIVX formats - I don't really know anybody who doesn't compress with DIVX anymore...I'd like to load those onto discs that I can play on my blu-ray player rather than go look for a computer - or put it on my 3 year-old Sony portable player. Very disappointing!

I just wanted to voice my opinion as others have done here - I believe Samsung has "gotten away" with not including DIVX compatibility just because there's so much confusion over the blu-ray market and specs - consumers will begin making this feature clearly required as soon as the newness dies down a bit. I know I will...I'm finding myself in the market for a new player only 7 months after I bought this one - the only reason being it doesn't have DIVX support! It is worth the entire cost of the player to me...

Now that the BD-P1600 is out around here, I seriously doubt we'll see anymore updates to the 1500...it's a shame!

DivX should be a given

by triangles95 - 7/26/09 7:45 PM In reply to: DivX should be a given by dhuhtala

Another vote for divx. I did my research online before selecting a br player. I saw it supported divx. After I could no longer return it I found out it was only European fw that supported it. If samsung were smart they'd add it. looks like I'll have to go buy a cheap dvd player for my divx and it certainly won't be samsung. It's a shame I used to be a fan of Samsung products. I won't give them the opportunity to burn me again. Hopefully someone will figure out how to hack the euro firm ware and patch Divx into the US fw.
